Font de les Ordigues is a named spring on the Engolasters fountain network above Escaldes-Engordany, at a mapped elevation of about 1,717 metres. It is one of four natural fountains identified along the Circuit de les Fonts, alongside Font de les Molleres, Font dels Corralets and Font de la Closa. The spring is reached on foot through a mountain landscape of forest, rocky slopes, lake paths and old water infrastructure. FEDA records a maintenance and control contract for the water network of Font de les Ordigues, showing that the site has an infrastructure dimension as well as a natural-source identity; that contract alone does not establish that visitors may drink from the outlet. Carry water unless current signs explicitly confirm potability.
The Engolasters area lies above the centre of Escaldes-Engordany and combines the road to the lake, Sant Miquel d’Engolasters church, forest trails and the UNESCO-listed Madriu valley approach. Font de les Ordigues is not on the urban street grid and is not a separate staffed attraction. Its mapped position is near Agulles d’Engolasters and the Bordes d’Engolasters area, while official route descriptions place it among a series of fountains on the wooded slopes. Visitors are therefore best served by planning a walking circuit rather than searching for a drive-up entrance. The spring’s elevation also means the weather can feel different from the town below.
One accessible way to encounter the area is the official Circuit de les Fonts, a 2.8-kilometre outing that takes a little over 90 minutes. Visit Andorra describes it as Andorra’s first universally accessible hiking itinerary and says approximately 1,200 metres form the adapted section leading from the circuit toward the Corralets rest point. The path uses textures, colours and a guiding handrail to help people with visual or mobility impairments anticipate obstacles. Font de les Ordigues is listed as one of the natural fountains along the broader circuit, but visitors should not assume that the adapted 1,200-metre portion reaches this higher spring: the exact accessible section and the spring’s mapped position must be distinguished.
For a direct mountain approach, the official MTB Trail 70 is named for Font de les Ordigues and starts from the Font de la Closa picnic and barbecue area. Visit Andorra describes it as a low-difficulty route with about 200 metres of elevation change; the page gives 3.8 kilometres in its technical information while its narrative refers to a six-kilometre circuit. That internal distance discrepancy should be resolved against the current downloadable track before riding. The page’s route description is aimed at mountain biking, not a guarantee that the trail is suitable for every walker or adapted user. For pedestrians, the official fountain circuit and current local signage provide clearer context.
The longer Escaldes–Engolasters recreation trail lists Font de les Ordigues around kilometre 7, after the lake entrance at approximately kilometre 5.5. It then places Font de les Molleres at roughly kilometre 7.5 and Font dels Corralets near kilometre 8. These are distances along a 14-kilometre route from central Escaldes, not distances from the lake parking or from one spring to another in a straight line. The route is rated moderate and typically takes three to six hours. Starting closer to the lake can shorten the walk, but the return route and total climb must be recalculated using a current map.
The spring sits within a landscape shaped by both natural drainage and human water management. Engolasters’ channels and tunnels form part of the area’s hydroelectric history, and route material describes water features beside paths and small tunnels. FEDA’s published procurement record names maintenance and control of the Font de les Ordigues water network, which is evidence that the site has a managed infrastructure component. It does not provide visitor instructions, water test results or a statement that the fountain is potable. The safest interpretation is to respect any posted notices at the source and use bottled or carried water for drinking unless a current public sign says otherwise.
Walking conditions change with season and route choice. The mountain paths can be damp, rocky or slippery after rain, and snow or ice can linger in shaded areas above the lake. Routes on foot and by mountain bike share space in places, so walkers should stay alert and allow riders to pass safely. If the outing continues beyond the spring toward the Madriu valley or Coll Jovell, total effort and exposure increase. Check the forecast, route closures and the official track before setting out. There are no fixed visitor opening hours or staffed admission arrangements identified for the spring; safe access depends on daylight, weather and the condition of the paths.
The area is useful for visitors who want more than a single fountain: it can be combined with Lake Engolasters, the viewpoint on the Circuit de les Fonts and other springs. Sant Miquel d’Engolasters is a separate Romanesque church and heritage stop, not part of the spring itself. Picnic facilities are better documented at Font de la Closa and the Corralets rest point than at the exact Ordigues outlet, so plan meals and rest stops accordingly. Do not assume toilets, staffed services or guaranteed water flow at the spring. Carry out rubbish and avoid disturbing channels, wet ground or the forest around the source.
Font de les Ordigues is best suited to walkers or cyclists who have chosen a route through Engolasters and want a named water waypoint within it. The spring’s high position and its connection with local water infrastructure make it more than a generic map pin, while the neighboring fountains and lake offer options for extending the outing. The practical limits are equally important: the adapted route segment is not the same as every trail, MTB distance information conflicts, and potable status is unconfirmed. Choose the exact approach, check the track and signs, and treat the spring as a landscape and route feature rather than a guaranteed drinking tap.
