Funicamp is a mountain lift, not a bus that carries visitors across Andorra. It starts in Encamp and climbs to Solanelles, where the ski area and summer mountain activities begin. Whether it is the right way to travel depends on the date and destination: in winter it is a principal ski-area access point, while its summer operation is a separately dated sightseeing and activity service. It does not take passengers directly to the lakes, trail destinations or neighbouring towns that may appear on a broader mountain map.S001S002

That distinction changes the whole day plan. A skier can use Encamp as a practical base and board the Funicamp with the relevant ski access. A pedestrian visitor needs the correct pedestrian product and must plan around the lift’s operating window. Someone travelling to a remote lake may need an additional 4x4 excursion, a marked walk or another connection from Solanelles. If the aim is simply to move between Encamp and Andorra la Vella, the ordinary L2 bus is the appropriate transport comparison—not a 6-kilometre cable car ride up the mountain.S001S003

First choose what “going up” means

The Funicamp links the town of Encamp with Solanelles, the upper station at about 2,500 metres. Grandvalira describes the cableway as 6 kilometres long and gives a winter journey time of about 15 minutes; its dedicated Funicamp page gives about 25 minutes for the journey in general. Because the operator publishes different journey estimates on different pages, use the date-specific time shown for your actual product and allow extra time to queue, board and reach the next connection. A lift ride is not the same as the total time from a hotel or bus stop to a ski slope or trailhead.S001S002

At the top, the destination is Solanelles—not every place in the Encamp sector. In winter, Solanelles is connected to Grandvalira’s ski network, and skiers can continue on open lifts and pistes according to that day’s operation. In summer, the offer is different: visitors may use the top station for views, the café or restaurant, mountain routes, e-bike circuits and seasonal excursions. Some activities begin at the mid-station or require a separate ticket, guide or transport leg.S001S004

Your actual goalIs Funicamp relevant? What must be checked
Skiing in Grandvalira from EncampYes. It is the Encamp sector’s principal lift connection to Solanelles and the wider ski domain. The day’s lift and piste status, pass validity, first/last lift times, snow conditions and the route back to Encamp.
A pedestrian visit to Solanelles in winterPotentially. Grandvalira says Funicamp access is included in the winter pedestrian pass.Whether the lift is operating for pedestrians on the chosen date, the current pass rules and price, and any weather restriction.
A summer visit to the mountainOnly during the announced summer operating dates.Seasonal opening, ticket type, last ascent, return time and whether the chosen activity is also open.
Reaching Lake Cubil or Orri del CubilSometimes, as a separate summer excursion.Whether the 4x4 bus is operating, its ticket and departure schedule, the return connection and walking alternatives.
Travelling from Encamp to Andorra la VellaUsually not. The L2 bus serves the town-to-town journey.Current bus timetable and stop; do not ride the cable car up to Solanelles as if it were an urban connection.
Carrying a bicycleOnly with the right product and current operator rules.Grandvalira states that a Bike Pass is required and a Pedestrian Pass is not valid for bicycle access. Confirm bicycle type, reservation and operating dates.

This quick distinction prevents the most common planning mistake: buying an ascent ticket before confirming what is at the upper station, how to continue and when the return closes. For a visitor with no skiing or booked activity, a “ride up” is not automatically an all-day mountain itinerary.S001

Winter 2026–27: ski access, pedestrian access and the return

As of 24 September 2026, Grandvalira lists the 2026–27 winter season as scheduled from 4 December 2026 to 4 April 2027, subject to snow and weather conditions. The resort gives general slope hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Those are resort-level dates and hours, not a guarantee that every lift, piste, restaurant or service will operate throughout the season. Check the live sector map and Funicamp status on the day, especially early and late in the season.S005

For a skier, Funicamp functions as the first lift from Encamp into the ski domain. Once at Solanelles, the rest of the day depends on which connections are open. Grandvalira’s sector descriptions say that Encamp connects to the wider ski area via the slopes; visitors should not infer that a particular route to another sector is open just because it appears on a printed map. Snow, wind, maintenance, capacity, skill level and the daily lift plan all affect what can be skied. If you are returning to Encamp, keep the last lift time in mind before skiing far from Solanelles. A piste connection across the domain is not a substitute for a confirmed lift back to the valley.S003S005

Pedestrians have a separate decision. The Funicamp page says winter access is included in the pedestrian pass. The 2026–27 Andorra Mountain Pass also includes one ascent and one descent per day on a list of specified Grandvalira lifts, including Funicamp; its published prices are €20 for a day pass and €182 for a season pass. That pass is designed for ski touring and snowshoeing access, and does not turn closed ski terrain into a walking route. Read the product conditions before purchase and confirm that the pass you hold covers the journey you plan.S001S006

Do not assume that a ski pass, pedestrian pass, Mountain Pass and summer return ticket are interchangeable. Their entitlements differ. A skier’s pass is intended for use within the ski area under the ski-pass rules. The pedestrian product supports lift access without skiing, while the Mountain Pass has a stated daily ascent/descent allowance tied to designated lifts and mountain activities. Bicycle transport has another category: Grandvalira explicitly requires a Bike Pass for bicycle access and says the Pedestrian Pass is not valid for this purpose.S001S006

The resort describes Funicamp as suitable for adaptive use and identifies it as an access point for skiers with reduced mobility. It recommends coordinating with staff in advance according to the individual’s needs. That is useful evidence about the lift’s intended access role, but it does not establish that every approach, ticketing queue, snow surface, piste, restaurant, toilet or onward lift is suitable for every mobility device. Contact the operator with the equipment and assistance requirements, and plan the upper-station portion separately.S007

Winter is not a guaranteed daily schedule. Wind or other conditions can interrupt mountain lifts even when the resort is open. A visitor who depends on Funicamp to return to Encamp should verify the lift’s live operation and not plan to stay at Solanelles until the posted final minute. Leave a buffer for queues, equipment, children and the walk from the upper terminal to the next service. If the lift closes, a mountain descent is not a casual fallback: use only a route that is officially open and suitable for your preparation, or follow the operator’s instructions.S005

Summer 2026: a dated sightseeing product, not a year-round gondola

The summer offer has a defined calendar. Grandvalira lists the 2026 Funicamp season as 11 July to 8 September, open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with the last ascent at 3 p.m. That date range has passed as of 24 September 2026; do not use the summer timetable as an open-now schedule or assume that the lift remains available between the summer and winter seasons. The operator also says opening and closing dates may change.S001S008

For summer 2026, the published pedestrian fares were €16 for a return ride, €11 for an ascent-only ticket and €22 for the return cable-car ride plus the 4x4 l’Orri del Cubil excursion. The combined product was sold at the ticket office. These are dated summer prices, not current winter fares or a forecast for summer 2027. The operator’s live ticketing page should be checked for the season and date you intend to travel.S001

The summer Funicamp is best understood as a mountain visit with a return constraint. If the last ascent is at 3 p.m. and the lift closes at 4 p.m., the upper-station visit cannot be planned as an open-ended afternoon. Check whether the final descent is timed separately from the last ascent, and allow enough time to re-board from the activity area. A person arriving late in the day may have little time at Solanelles, particularly if the purpose is to walk, eat or join another excursion.S001

The 4x4 excursion is an extra link

During the 2026 summer season, the l’Orri del Cubil offer began with the ascent to Solanelles. From there, a 4x4 bus or a walking route connected visitors with the Orri del Cubil near Lake Cubil. Grandvalira listed departures from Solanelles Restaurant towards the lake from 10:30 a.m. at half-hour intervals through 1:30 p.m.; return departures from the lake started at 10:45 a.m. and continued at half-hour intervals, with the last listed ascent at 3:15 p.m. The operator gives an approximate 15-minute journey each way.S001

The cable-car and 4x4 schedules are separate pieces of the connection. The Funicamp page lists a 3 p.m. last ascent for the cable car, while the 4x4 timetable lists a 3:15 p.m. last ascent from the lake. Do not assume that the later 4x4 departure overrides the cable-car schedule or guarantees a final lift connection. Confirm the complete sequence when buying the combined product, and choose a return departure that leaves a margin before the lift’s closing time.S001

The 4x4 ride is not a bus to Encamp, a general valley shuttle or a taxi from Lake Cubil. It is an excursion link from Solanelles to a particular destination. The walking alternative is a mountain route, not a simple paved stroll; check the official activity and route information for distance, surface, gradient, equipment and current conditions before selecting it. A combined ticket may make the transport sequence easier, but it cannot make the high-mountain terrain suitable for every visitor.S001

Other summer activities also have their own requirements. The Grandvalira page lists e-bike circuits, the Clots de l’Aspra via ferrata and high-mountain fishing, among other offers. These are not automatically included in an ordinary lift ticket. The via ferrata listing specifies a maximum group size and advance contact; the fishing offer has age and licence conditions. Bookings, equipment, insurance, age rules and weather cancellations belong to the activity operator’s terms, not to the cable-car fare.S001

Getting to the lower station from town

The lower station is in Encamp. Grandvalira points visitors travelling from Andorra la Vella to the L2 bus and publishes approximate weekday and weekend frequency on its Encamp access page; consult the current bus operator timetable for the selected date and stop. This is the relevant public-transport connection if your origin is the capital and your destination is the Funicamp terminal. The L2 bus and the lift answer different questions: the bus brings you to Encamp, and the lift then takes you uphill to Solanelles.S003

By car, the same operator page identifies the CG-2 road as the route to Encamp. It also describes a winter Park and Ride option: park in one of four communal car parks in the village and take the Funibus to Funicamp. Grandvalira lists Coma Llarga, Prat de Baró, Els Arinsols and Prat de l’Areny, and says the Funibus runs from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 20-minute intervals. To validate free parking under this offer, it says a valid day’s Grandvalira ski pass and the parking ticket must be shown to the driver or at the Encamp tourist office opposite the lift.S009

Those Park and Ride terms are tied to skiing in the Encamp sector; do not assume that a pedestrian sightseeing ticket qualifies for free parking or the Funibus offer. Check the current conditions before leaving a car. The Funicamp complex also lists covered and outdoor parking, with daily charges; the facility page gives capacities, but availability and prices can change. Choosing town parking plus a shuttle may suit a ski day, while a summer passenger may need to compare direct station parking with the seasonal Green Line or other local service.S003S009

If travelling from Escaldes-Engordany, the Encamp page directs readers to the L2 bus from Andorra la Vella towards Encamp, but it does not establish an exact door-to-door connection from every Escaldes address. Start from the exact accommodation or town stop, identify the bus stop nearest the lower terminal, then add the time to buy or collect the correct pass and reach the boarding queue. Do not calculate a local journey from straight-line distance or assume the cable car is an urban link between the two parishes.S003

Tickets, equipment and what can travel with you

The operator’s 2026 summer page clearly separates three products: return cable-car access, ascent-only access, and a return ride bundled with the 4x4 excursion. A ticket that covers the lift does not necessarily cover the activity at the top. Winter products are separate again, with pedestrian access included in a pedestrian pass and a daily Funicamp ascent/descent listed among the Mountain Pass entitlements. Read the validity dates, number of rides and eligible lifts on the exact product before purchase.S001S006

Build the connection in the right order

Think of the trip as linked legs rather than one “Funicamp journey”:

  1. Origin to Encamp. This may be a walk, the L2 bus, a car journey or a local shuttle. The chosen stop or car park is the start of the lift transfer, not the top of the mountain.
  2. Encamp to Solanelles. The Funicamp fare or pass covers the lift only according to its terms. The operator gives different general journey estimates on its pages, so use the live product details and preserve queue time.
  3. Solanelles to the activity. In winter, this may mean entering the open ski network; in summer, it may mean staying near the upper terminal, joining an e-bike or guided activity, or taking the separately scheduled 4x4 excursion.
  4. Return to the correct endpoint. A round trip by lift returns to Encamp only if the lift is operating and the ticket includes that descent. A 4x4 return to Solanelles is not the final descent to the town, and a one-way ascent ticket is not a round-trip product.

That sequence matters when a group combines different activities. A skier may leave the lift area on skis and rejoin Funicamp later; a pedestrian may need to remain near the upper station; and a lake excursion may have a departure that does not align with every cable-car arrival. If one member needs a pedestrian ticket while another has a ski pass, check both entitlements and choose a meeting point that does not require anyone to enter terrain they cannot use. Do not assume that the group can reunite at an intermediate station unless the operator confirms that the planned lift and activity make it possible.S001S003

The published 15–25-minute estimates are also not the complete transfer time. For a public-bus arrival, include the walk from the stop, ticket collection, equipment handling, the queue and boarding. For a car, include parking and the walk from the relevant lot. At the upper station, include the distance to the restaurant, activity meeting point or trail. Then work backwards from the last lift. This is especially important for the 4x4 combination: a scheduled bus departure from Lake Cubil is useful only if it leaves enough time to reach Solanelles and board the final descent. If a delay would leave no safe or permitted alternative, choose an earlier 4x4 departure.S001S003S009

When a ticket offers one-way travel, compare it with a return product only after confirming how you will get back. The 2026 summer table lists ascent-only at €11 and round-trip at €16, but the €5 difference does not make walking down the mountain a sensible default. A descent on foot is a separate route decision requiring a suitable track, time, weather, footwear and fitness. Similarly, an ascent-only product may suit a walker beginning at Encamp who has independently planned a safe onward route, but the Funicamp ticket itself does not provide navigation or rescue coverage for every possible trail. Purchase based on the route you will actually use, not on the cheapest line in a ticket table.S001

The same logic applies to multi-day and season passes. A Mountain Pass can cover a specified daily ascent and descent on the listed lifts, but it is intended for designated mountain activities and has its own operating hours and rescue conditions. A ski pass supports lift use tied to skiing under resort rules. If you are buying a pass mainly to enjoy the view from Solanelles, compare the pedestrian offer first and verify that it includes the access you need. If you already own a pass, confirm whether it is active for the exact season; a pass from the previous winter should not be assumed to cover a later summer or winter without the current validity conditions.S006

Grandvalira permits dogs on Funicamp if they are clean and not covered in mud. The page also states that children under five may ride free, with proof of age required. These are operator-published terms; check the current conditions before travel, especially if combining the ride with a separate activity or another lift. A dog allowed on the cable car is not necessarily accepted by an onward activity, restaurant or shuttle.S001

For winter equipment, Grandvalira lists a Funicamp ski-locker service beside the ticket office. Its 2026–27 page describes 240 lockers, each with space for four equipment sets, opening hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and prices of €26 per day for a locker accommodating four sets, €13 for one-day storage of two sets, and €320 for a seasonal locker. The same page says reservations are available. These are ski-equipment products; the listing does not establish that a large suitcase, travel bag, stroller or non-ski item can be stored there. Ask the operator before arriving with luggage that does not fit the locker description.S010

The sources reviewed do not specify a general baggage allowance for the Funicamp cabins. Travellers with bulky luggage, folded mobility equipment, a child carrier, a pram or specialist sports equipment should contact Grandvalira before travel and ask what must be booked, folded or handled separately. Do not treat a ski locker as a left-luggage office, and do not assume the cable car is a practical luggage transfer between accommodation and a different resort sector.S001S010

Cyclists should pay particular attention to the product distinction. Grandvalira says a Bike Pass is required for bicycle access and that a Pedestrian Pass cannot be used to carry a bicycle. Its page describes summer e-bike routes from the Funicamp mid-station, but route availability, bicycle type, battery rules and lift capacity are date-specific. Confirm whether a particular bike may travel, whether a space must be reserved and which stations are open before building a cross-sector ride around the lift.S001

Accessibility and the last mile at Solanelles

Grandvalira describes Funicamp as authorised for adaptive use and recommends contacting staff in advance. That is a useful starting point for planning, not a complete accessibility audit. Ask about the step or gap at boarding, cabin space, safe positioning, transfer assistance, the upper-station exit and the exact surface between the terminal and the intended facility. If the visit includes skiing, confirm the accessible route from the lift to the equipment, lesson, slope and return lift; a lift that can carry a sit-ski does not make every slope suitable.S007

Solanelles is a high-mountain station, not a flat town plaza. The operator locates restaurants and summer activities there, while routes continue towards more remote terrain. Weather, snow, wind and the day’s lift operations can change what is reachable. A visitor who wants views and a meal should verify which dining venue is open and whether the route from the upper terminal matches their mobility needs. A person heading to Lake Cubil or a via ferrata needs the activity-specific transport and safety information as well.S001S004

If someone in your party cannot ski, a pedestrian ticket may allow them to accompany skiers up the lift, but it does not necessarily provide access to ski-only areas or open slopes. Decide whether the group will meet at a restaurant or another public facility, and agree on a time and fallback if lift operations change. The operator’s stated Funicamp journey time is only one piece of the schedule; queues, activity departures and return boarding still matter.S001

A practical day plan by season

For a winter ski day

Choose Encamp as the entry point if its location and the day’s open sector suit your group. Check the Grandvalira 2026–27 season calendar, current Encamp lift status and the type of pass each member needs. If arriving by car, confirm the Park and Ride conditions and use one of the listed communal car parks only if the free Funibus offer applies to your day. If arriving by bus, check the L2 timetable, then allow time at the station for pass collection, lockers and equipment. Before leaving Solanelles, confirm the route and last-lift plan back to Encamp; do not rely on an unverified cross-domain connection as your return.S003S005S009S010

For a pedestrian winter visit

Check that Funicamp is operating for pedestrian access on your date, then compare the pedestrian pass with any eligible Mountain Pass you already hold. Confirm whether the selected product includes one or more rides and whether it can be used on the intended lift. Plan a modest upper-station visit around daylight, weather and return time rather than treating the high station as an open-ended promenade. If mobility needs or luggage affect boarding, contact the lift team in advance.S001S006S007

For a summer day

Start with the season calendar, not a remembered summer timetable. The 2026 service ran only from 11 July to 8 September, with a 3 p.m. last ascent; by 24 September it had closed. During a future summer season, check both the cable-car ticket and any separate 4x4 or activity booking. Allow time for the upper station, check the return departure and choose the final lake shuttle with a buffer before the last cable-car descent. If travelling by bus, confirm the seasonal local service and exact stop; summer and winter connections may not be the same.S001S008

If your destination is Encamp, not Solanelles

Stay in the town transport network. Use the bus or walk for local movement, depending on your starting point and the current route map. The Funicamp is for gaining access to the mountain; it does not replace a bus connection to Andorra la Vella, an airport transfer, a town-centre shuttle or an onward link to another village. Buying a cable-car ticket for a town-to-town journey adds an unnecessary climb, a separate fare and a time-sensitive descent.S003

When another option is better

Funicamp is a strong choice when Encamp is the convenient starting point for skiing, a pedestrian mountain visit or an activity whose access is explicitly tied to Solanelles. It is a poor substitute for ordinary public transport, a transfer to a hotel in another parish, or a route to a specific lake whose last mile is not included. The correct choice follows the real origin and destination, not the visual appeal of a long cableway.S001S003

For a ski day, compare the Funicamp with a direct arrival at another Grandvalira sector only after checking the group’s accommodation, lesson location, snow conditions and open-lift network. For a summer mountain outing, compare the seasonal lift plus a booked 4x4 excursion with the walking alternative, and make sure the physical effort suits the group. For a day in Encamp’s town centre, use the local street and bus network. For ski equipment storage, reserve the appropriate locker rather than carrying gear through town; for a suitcase or unusual item, ask the operator because the published ski-locker details do not answer that question.S001S003S010

Before setting out

  • Check the season and Funicamp’s live opening status. The summer service and winter ski operation have different dates and products.
  • Match the ticket to the activity: ski access, pedestrian lift access, Mountain Pass, bicycle access and the summer 4x4 bundle are not interchangeable.
  • Confirm the return connection from Solanelles and any activity departure before boarding.
  • Verify the current L2 bus, Funibus, local summer service or parking terms for the exact date.
  • Ask about bulky baggage, mobility equipment, pets or a bicycle if the operator’s published conditions do not cover your specific item or need.
  • Use the day’s lift, weather and snow information—not an old map or a past season’s timetable—to decide what is reachable.

With those checks, the Funicamp becomes easy to place in an Andorra itinerary: a seasonal mountain lift from Encamp, useful when its upper station is the actual destination or a planned gateway. It is not a shortcut between towns, and the 15–25-minute ride is only one segment of the day. The rest depends on a valid pass, a working connection, the right last mile and a return plan that still works when mountain operations change.
