MW Museu de l’Electricitat is Andorra’s electricity museum inside FEDA’s working hydroelectric complex on Avinguda de la Bartra in Encamp. It is one of the country’s most distinctive industrial-heritage visits because the museum is not a detached exhibition hall: it occupies the ground floor of the hydroelectric power-station building that has operated since 1934. Visitors normally come for a compact, roughly one-hour introduction to how electricity is generated, how electrification changed Andorra, and how the national power system developed. The decisive practical point for a 2026 visit is that the museum itself is temporarily closed for a major renovation that began in April. FEDA Cultura remains active, but anyone planning a trip specifically to enter the museum should wait for an official reopening announcement rather than relying on old opening times.

The setting gives the museum much of its value. FEDA describes the Encamp plant as a historic hydroelectric station and a building of cultural interest, notable both for its granite architecture and for its role in Andorra’s modernization. The facility still has an operational purpose, so the visit traditionally connects heritage with infrastructure that continues to matter to the country’s electricity supply. The building also houses FEDA’s electricity control operations, the nerve centre from which the national network is monitored and managed. That makes the museum especially rewarding for visitors interested in engineering, energy systems, industrial history, or the transformation of Andorra during the twentieth century rather than only traditional art or ethnography.

Before the renovation, the permanent museum route explained basic electrical principles as well as the history of electricity in Andorra. FEDA’s own description says the display included objects connected with the development of electricity, explanations of where electricity comes from and how it is generated, a chronological section tracing the Andorran story from 1909, and an experimental room where visitors could test physical principles through hands-on activities. The strongest part of the experience was the direct relationship with the machinery around it. The route could bring visitors close to the turbine-and-generator environment of the plant rather than presenting hydroelectricity only through diagrams.

That machinery has unusual historical continuity. FEDA states that the Encamp hydroelectric station entered service in 1934 and that the museum’s machine room contains three generators. FEDA’s specialist “heart of the plant” visits have also explained the generators, exciters and water arrivals used to produce power from water associated with Engolasters. This context helps explain why the museum is more than a science display for children. The site links the physical equipment of early Andorran electrification with a national story about economic and social change, and it gives adults with no technical background an accessible way to understand what a hydroelectric system actually does.

The museum opened in 2009, and by spring 2026 FEDA had decided that its original format needed a substantial update. The renovation is not a cosmetic closure. FEDA says the project includes new museum content, improved installations and better accessibility. Plans announced before work began described a more immersive experience with several connected spaces: a redesigned reception that emphasizes the historic building, a larger interactive area with manipulable exhibits and multilingual screens, an immersive room dealing with history, energy transition and sustainability, and a new viewing area intended to explain the live electricity-control operation. Because the work changes both the interpretation and visitor facilities, descriptions of the old interior should be treated as historical context until the reopened museum can be checked.

The reopening timetable has shifted enough that visitors should be cautious with dates. When FEDA awarded the works in November 2025, it said the aim was to reopen during the final third of 2026. Later 2026 educational information has referred to the renewed museum reopening after the renovation, while the museum’s current official page still states simply that it has been closed for works since 3 April 2026. The safest planning rule is therefore straightforward: do not travel to Encamp expecting museum entry until FEDA Cultura posts a confirmed reopening date and renewed visitor hours. Old Tuesday-to-Sunday schedules still visible in some directories predate the works and should not be used as current access information.

The closure does not mean FEDA’s heritage programme has disappeared. During the renovation, FEDA Cultura has continued activities away from the museum, especially around the Camí hidroelèctric d’Engolasters and the Casa dels Guardes. Current 2026 programming includes guided visits and family activities there, and FEDA has explicitly said that its cultural and educational work continues while the museum building is being transformed. For travellers whose main interest is hydroelectric heritage rather than the museum building itself, those scheduled outdoor activities can be a useful alternative, but they are separate experiences with their own dates, booking requirements and seasonal conditions.

The museum address is Avinguda de la Bartra, s/n, AD200 Encamp, on the Escaldes side of the parish along the CG-2 corridor. FEDA encourages public transport for school and group access and points users to the Mou-te journey-planning service; drivers should not assume general visitor parking arrangements during the construction period. When the museum was operating, a standard educational visit was around 60 minutes, which remains a sensible planning benchmark for the future exhibition unless FEDA announces a substantially changed format. A longer half-day makes sense only if the museum is combined with an Engolasters hydroelectric activity or another Encamp stop.

Accessibility also needs to be read in the context of the renovation. Andorra’s official museum directory listed the museum as accessible for people with reduced mobility before the works, and FEDA has specifically identified improved accessibility as one of the objectives of the rebuild. That is encouraging, but it is not a substitute for post-renovation details about entrances, lifts, toilets or assisted access. Travellers with mobility requirements should check the reopened museum information directly with FEDA Cultura before visiting.

For now, MW Museu de l’Electricitat is best understood as an important but temporarily unavailable Encamp attraction whose value comes from the combination of a real 1934 hydroelectric plant, Andorra’s electrification history and practical science interpretation. Its future version is intended to be more interactive and immersive while preserving the link to the working power infrastructure. Once the reopening is confirmed, it should again suit families with older children, engineering-minded travellers, industrial-heritage enthusiasts and anyone curious about how a small mountain country built and manages its electricity system. Until then, the correct plan is to treat the museum building as closed for renovation and use FEDA Cultura’s current Engolasters programme for any available heritage activities.
