Font dels Plans is a natural spring waypoint on the mountain paths above Els Plans in the parish of Canillo, Andorra. The mapped point appears in OpenStreetMap under the generic label “Font,” but local route records refer to a spring as “Font els Plans” and describe a wooden trough at the Plans. The name is therefore useful for visitors following the trail, although the mapped outlet’s exact on-site construction and signage have not been independently inspected. This is a small landscape feature, not a staffed attraction or a place with visitor facilities.
The spring lies in the wider approach to Vall del Riu, a mountain valley reached from the hamlet of Els Plans above Ransol. The route begins from the small settlement and climbs away from the road, passing dry-stone walls before entering woodland. A 2024 track published by the Comú de Canillo describes the marked path from Els Plans toward the Vall del Riu refuge; a 2025 user route labels “Font els Plans” among the local waypoints. These records give the spring a place in a real walking landscape, but they do not establish that every route version passes the same outlet or that the fountain is currently flowing.
Els Plans is a small mountain settlement reached by road from the Ransol area. Parking near the trail start is limited, and the uphill access road is narrower and quieter than the main CG-2 corridor. Visitors should avoid blocking residents’ access or private entrances and use only appropriate parking spaces. At the start, follow the signed path toward Vall del Riu rather than relying on the spring name alone. A generic “Font” map label can be difficult to distinguish among several water features in Canillo, so download a map that includes the OSM coordinate and compare it with the trail signage.
The walk from Els Plans is much more demanding than a short village stroll. A community track by the Comú de Canillo gives the one-way route to the Vall del Riu refuge as about 3.1 kilometres with 337 metres of ascent and an estimated time of 51 minutes. A separate visitor route from Els Plans toward the lakes records 5.69 kilometres one way and more than 640 metres of ascent, with a difficult rating. These figures describe different endpoints and should not be combined into a single spring itinerary. The spring is a waypoint; check the current track, total ascent, return plan and daylight before choosing how far beyond it to continue.
Beyond the lower woodland, Vall del Riu opens toward the refuge and a series of high mountain lakes. The scenery transitions from village-edge stone walls and shaded forest to open slopes, streams and rocky terrain. Visitors who are walking only to see the spring can turn around at their planned waypoint; reaching the refuge or lakes requires additional climbing and suitable mountain preparation. The route records recommend mountain footwear, water, food, sun protection and clothing for changing conditions. There is no staffed service at the spring where supplies or route guidance can be obtained.
Font dels Plans should not be treated as a guaranteed source of potable water. The OSM record classifies the feature as a natural spring but does not provide a recent official water-quality test. A wooden trough or flowing outlet, if present, does not by itself prove that untreated water is safe to drink. Carry enough treated water for the intended outing and follow any current signs or instructions from the parish. The spring’s flow can also vary with season, snowmelt and dry weather; do not plan a long route on the assumption that it will provide a reliable refill.
The trail sits in a high-altitude setting where weather and ground conditions can change quickly. Rain can make the woodland path slippery, and snow or ice can cover both the route markings and the spring itself in colder months. Check the forecast, local trail status and daylight hours before departure. If visibility worsens or the route becomes unsafe, turn back rather than trying to continue by following a point on a phone screen. Let someone know your route if you are walking alone, and avoid entering private land or crossing barriers to reach a mapped water feature.
There are no fixed opening hours or admission fees for this outdoor spring. Access is through the walking paths and depends on conditions, not on a visitor centre schedule. The hamlet’s limited parking, lack of onsite staff and uncertain spring flow make it important to plan self-sufficiently. Contact the Canillo tourist office for current route information if you are unsure which path corresponds to the “Font els Plans” waypoint. Do not confuse this spring with the separate public parking area Font de Ferro in Ransol or with other named fountains elsewhere in the parish.
For a visit, navigate first to Els Plans and then use the marked Vall del Riu trail and a current hiking map to locate the spring waypoint. Allow more time than a simple distance estimate suggests, especially if continuing to the refuge or lakes. Font dels Plans offers a small, tangible pause on a route that quickly leaves the settled valley behind: a named mountain water point among stone boundaries, forest and the climbing path toward Vall del Riu. Its best use is as part of a carefully planned walk, not as a standalone roadside stop or an assured drinking-water source.
