Pic d’Encampadana is a 2,491-metre summit in the mountains between Canillo and Encamp. At 2,491 metres on Grandvalira’s mountain map, it rises above the lower resort stations and offers a ridge-level view of the eastern Pyrenean landscape. The summit sits above El Forn and the Riba Escorxada area, in a landscape shared by resort paths, forest tracks and open alpine slopes. It is a natural peak, not a lift station or viewpoint platform, and should not be confused with nearby Tosa de Llosada, Pic dels Maians or Cap de Rep.
The mountain can be approached from several directions. One route begins at the end of the Carretera del Forn in Canillo, climbs through the Mont Magic Family Park area and continues toward Pic dels Maians and other local high points. Another approach from El Tarter uses the resort’s Riba Escorxada sector and the Camí de l’Obac de Canillo. A route from Cortals d’Encamp links Pic de Maians, Pic d’Encampadana and Tosa de Llosada. These are distinct outings: resort access and trail character differ, and a route that passes the summit in a multi-peak circuit may be much longer than a direct ascent.
Grandvalira classifies the Pic d’Encampadana hiking itinerary among its high-difficulty Canillo routes. That matters because the ski-area setting can make the terrain seem gentler than it is. Some approaches use forest trails or service tracks before reaching steep slopes and a ridge. Expect sustained ascent, open ground and occasional stretches where navigation depends on small tracks rather than continuous formal waymarks. A common route from the Canillo/El Forn side climbs to Pic dels Maians first and continues to Encampadana; a longer loop from Ransol can cover around 13 kilometres and roughly 960 metres of ascent. These figures belong to that longer itinerary, not to every approach, and should not be used as a universal walking time or difficulty rating.
The summit’s surroundings shift from forest to high, open slopes. Lower approaches pass through pine woodland and ski infrastructure, while the upper ground opens toward views across the Canillo and Encamp valleys. From the top, visitors can see the nearby ski terrain and surrounding Pyrenean peaks, including Tosa de Llosada and the ridge toward Pic dels Maians. The forested side offers shelter from wind at lower elevations, but the summit remains exposed. Cloud can flatten the relief and obscure the distinction between nearby high points, so map navigation is important even in a familiar resort area.
Pic d’Encampadana suits fit hikers with experience on steep mountain trails and an ability to navigate beyond marked resort paths. Visitors should choose a route matched to their fitness and confirm whether the ski-area trail is open to walkers. Carry an offline map, suitable footwear, water, warm layers and a headlamp. There is no water source, shelter or staffed service on the summit. If using a multi-peak route, identify the connection between Maians, Encampadana and Llosada before setting out; the apparent closeness of summits can hide additional climbs and awkward descent lines.
Season changes access. In summer, marked hiking and adventure-park trails may be available, but pedestrian access through Mont Magic or resort infrastructure can depend on operations. Check current opening and route status with Grandvalira or Canillo. Winter brings ski traffic and piste closures; do not walk uphill on active pistes or cross closed operational areas. Snowshoe circuits in the resort are separate from the summit route and may not reach the top. Snow and ice can make steep slopes hazardous, while avalanche conditions need a fresh assessment independent of any summer GPS track.
The peak can be combined with Pic dels Maians and Tosa de Llosada for a longer ridge day. Such a circuit is a worthwhile challenge for experienced hikers, but is not one easy trail. Distance, ascent and descent vary by start point: an approach from Cortals differs from one beginning at El Forn or Riba Escorxada. Check bus, parking and lift options at the chosen trailhead, and avoid depending on a cable car unless it is confirmed open and appropriate for the planned return. Facilities at the resort stations are separate from the summit and may close outside the operating season.
There are no daily opening hours at Pic d’Encampadana itself. Grandvalira lift and piste schedules apply to resort facilities, not to the natural peak. Access can be restricted by ski operations, maintenance, weather and trail closures. The summit has no ticket gate, staffed building or visitor facilities. Nearby restaurants and first-aid points are located at ski stations and are seasonal. Before hiking, check the latest resort information and observe signs on the ground; where an area is closed to pedestrians, choose another approach rather than bypassing barriers.
For a shorter outing, walk a designated forest or snowshoe route in the Riba Escorxada or El Forn sectors and enjoy the high-mountain scenery without climbing the summit. Those seeking the peak should budget time for the full ascent and any ridge continuation. Pic d’Encampadana offers a satisfying viewpoint over the resort mountains, but its proximity to lifts should not be mistaken for guaranteed summit access. A responsible visit combines a suitable open pedestrian route, current seasonal information and a clear distinction between this summit and the neighbouring high points.
