Refugi de Prat Primer is a free, unguarded mountain shelter at 2,235 metres in the upper Vall de Prat Primer above Andorra la Vella. It stands below Collada de Prat Primer and on a network of marked paths that link the La Comella area with Basses Roges, Refugi de Claror and the Madriu-Perafita-Claror valleys. The refuge offers a simple place to rest or shelter during a mountain outing; it is not a staffed lodge, restaurant or reservable accommodation.

The Government’s current refuge register lists eight beds, year-round opening, a stove, table, benches, a covered wood porch and water nearby. FAM lists ten places and the same elevation and year-round status, with similar equipment. Since the authorities differ on capacity, plan around eight and expect that there may be fewer usable places when you arrive. “Open all year” does not guarantee safe trail conditions or available sleeping space. There is no attendant, booking or meal service. Carry your own food, sleeping bag, headlamp and water treatment. Although water is listed nearby by official sources, the source may vary seasonally and is not certified potable; do not count on fuel being stocked in the porch.

The main ascent follows the Vall de Prat Primer from the La Comella side. Visit Andorra’s hiking information describes routes beginning near the La Comella road and climbing through forest alongside the Riu de la Comella before opening into the higher valley. A published hiking route to Prat Primer and onward to the Estany de la Nou area covers about 7.1 kilometres to the lake, with substantial climbing; the refuge is reached en route rather than at the endpoint. A separate Tomb de Prat Primer circuit is listed at about 9.47 kilometres. These figures refer to different itineraries and should not be used interchangeably. The route is steep and sustained in places, even where the trail itself is clear.

From the hut, a natural continuation climbs to Collada de Prat Primer and descends toward Estany de Basses Roges and Refugi de Claror. The GRP crosses the higher terrain, and a demanding loop around Collada de Prat Primer links the two shelters before continuing toward Coll Negre, Pic Negre and Collada de la Caülla. Visit Andorra describes a 21-kilometre difficult circuit that passes the refuge more than once; this is a strenuous trail-running route, not a recommended default for every hiker. Choose the route that matches your fitness, navigation skills and available daylight. If using public transport or leaving a car at La Comella, verify the actual trailhead and return logistics before departure.

The upper basin is a small mountain cirque, with steep slopes rising behind the shelter and open alpine ground above the tree line. The Riu de la Comella guides the lower approach, where forest and shaded terrain provide a contrast to the exposed high pass. From the higher route, Basses Roges and the Claror valley broaden the outing into the Madriu-Perafita-Claror landscape. That wider area is recognized for both natural qualities and a long history of mountain pastoral activity. The refuge itself has no exhibits or organized visitor service; its value is as a simple shelter positioned between valley and ridge.

Use the full name Refugi de Prat Primer when navigating. Collada de Prat Primer is the high pass above it, while Estany de Basses Roges is a lake farther along the route and Refugi de Claror lies beyond the pass. The official hiking and refuge maps show these as separate points. GPS coordinates for the hut are 42°28′42″N, 1°33′03″E. Because route options cross from Andorra la Vella parish into the Madriu-Perafita-Claror valleys, a line on a map can represent a long traverse rather than a short local loop.

There are no daily opening hours because the refuge is unguarded. The official year-round listing describes the building, not a guarantee that the high route is passable in winter. Snow, ice, wind and poor visibility can make the climb and the pass dangerous. Visit Andorra generally recommends routes above 1,700 metres between late June and late September, with a possible extension only when weather and terrain conditions permit. Check current forecasts, carry offline navigation and leave a route plan with someone. Summer storms can also develop quickly; turn around if the ridge or stream crossings become unsafe. Respect park rules and local fire restrictions, and pack out all rubbish.

Refugi de Prat Primer is a rewarding objective for hikers prepared for a sustained climb, or a useful overnight waypoint for a longer crossing toward Claror and Perafita. Its basic free shelter and high setting make it practical, but the capacity discrepancy, uncertain water and lack of staff require self-sufficiency. For a shorter visit, select a route that returns by the same valley rather than assuming that crossing the pass is a minor extension. For an overnight itinerary, have a safe alternative if the hut is full.
