Circuit de les Fonts is a moderate circular hiking route above Andorra la Vella, starting at the La Comella picnic area and running through forest, springs and limestone terrain on the capital’s shaded mountain side. The current official route page gives a distance of 8.57 kilometres, an ascent and descent of 343 metres and a broad duration range of three to six hours, with the descriptive text suggesting about three and a half hours in normal conditions. It is a good choice for walkers who want a half-day mountain outing without travelling to a remote valley, but it is not a flat urban stroll: the distance, elevation change and forest tracks require proper footwear, weather awareness and enough daylight.
The route starts at the Comella picnic area, with official coordinates of approximately 42.4983, 1.5303. From there it enters Scots-pine country and follows forest tracks through dense vegetation. The name reflects the presence of springs along the way, and the official description highlights a progression through wooded terrain toward the Planells de la Palomera, where pale limestone formations change the scenery. The route then levels out through the Bosc Negre before returning through the same broader mountain environment.
What makes the circuit particularly useful for visitors is its proximity to Andorra la Vella. Many Andorran hikes require a drive deep into a valley or up to a high trailhead, whereas Circuit de les Fonts begins from La Comella, a recreational area directly above the capital. This makes it possible to spend the morning hiking and still return to central Andorra la Vella for lunch or other sightseeing. The trade-off is that the path sits in a network of forest roads and trails, so carrying the official track or a current map is preferable to relying only on memory at junctions.
The municipal La Comella picnic site adds practical infrastructure at the start. It covers more than 16,500 square metres and includes stone tables, water points, waste-collection points, an adapted toilet, a ramp for wheelchairs and prams, and two vehicle-parking areas. These facilities make the trailhead more comfortable than a bare roadside start. They should not, however, be confused with the accessibility of the hike itself. An 8.57-kilometre moderate mountain route with 343 metres of climbing is a different environment from the developed picnic area.
The landscape is more varied than the modest elevation gain might suggest. Scots pine dominates parts of the circuit, while the Planells de la Palomera introduce exposed limestone and a more open mountain feel. The Bosc Negre section returns walkers to denser forest, and the succession of springs gives the route its identity. The official page presents these natural features as the core experience rather than a single summit or monument. Walkers who prefer continuous views may find other routes more dramatic, while those who enjoy forest, geology and changing vegetation should appreciate the quieter rhythm here.
Seasonality needs careful reading. Andorra Turisme gives a general safety recommendation that routes above 1,700 metres are best undertaken from late June to late September, with a possible extension from May to October when weather and terrain allow. Circuit de les Fonts itself begins lower, but mountain weather can still create mud, snow, ice or reduced visibility on sections of the circuit. The official duration range of three to six hours is therefore sensible: pace can vary significantly with conditions, navigation stops and how long walkers spend at springs or viewpoints.
There is no staffed entry gate or conventional daily opening timetable on the official route page. That does not mean the trail is equally appropriate at every hour. Starting early enough to finish in daylight is the sensible approach, especially outside midsummer. Carry water even though springs are a feature of the route; natural water sources should not automatically be assumed safe to drink without local confirmation. The picnic site has water points, which are a more practical place to prepare before leaving the developed area.
For navigation, the official route page offers a downloadable track, which is worth using. A moderate circular route can feel more complex than its statistics suggest when forest roads intersect, and the nearby Obaga network contains several other paths and viewpoints. The Comú has invested in signage and viewpoint routes on this slope, but hikers should still stay on the intended track. If the route becomes unclear, backtracking to the last confirmed marker is safer than improvising a shortcut through steep forest.
Allow about three and a half to five hours for most recreational visitors, depending on pace, stops and conditions; this sits within the official three-to-six-hour range. The hike is best paired with a relaxed plan afterwards rather than a tightly timed museum booking. Families with older children who already walk moderate trails may enjoy it, but the route length is substantial for younger children. Full wheelchair or pram accessibility is not supported by the trail specifications; the adapted features at La Comella apply to the picnic area, not the complete hiking circuit.
Circuit de les Fonts is one of the most convenient ways to move from Andorra la Vella into a genuine mountain setting without a long transfer. Its appeal is not a single headline viewpoint but the sequence of pine forest, springs, limestone and shaded woodland, combined with a manageable 343 metres of climbing. Treat it as a real half-day hike: use the official track, check weather and terrain, start with enough daylight and take advantage of La Comella’s facilities before entering the forest.
