The name “Gallery 43” is personal. Shabani was born in 1943, and biographical accounts explain that the gallery number refers directly to his birth year. It is not organized like a chronological museum with a fixed curatorial route, but the concentration of work over many decades lets visitors see recurring themes and changes in technique.

Rakip Shabani is known particularly for watercolor, though his practice is not limited to it.
