Lekuresi Castle is a ruined castle in southern Albania near Saranda. The castle is located southeast of the town center, on a prominent hilltop overlooking Saranda. From here, one can command the whole town as well as the Ksamil islands. The area was formerly part of the Himara region’s southern half. Ali Pasha of Ioannina besieged the fortress in the end of the 18th century, and the surrounding settlement was plundered.
The historic Lekuresi settlement was formerly guarded by the castle. It is square in design and features two round towers on the northwestern and south-eastern corners. Visitors must exit the main road on Qafë Gjashtë and ascend the town hill from the other side of town to reach the castle.
Lekuresi Castle is situated on Lekursi Hill and is only accessible by a narrow road that round the rear of the hill. The castle is around 3 to 4 kilometers from the heart of Saranda, and if you prefer to trek up the hill, it will take you about 45 minutes to an hour. The asphalt road is in excellent shape, so you can drive there easily, and there is plenty of parking. Many trips include a visit to the castle, and hiring a vehicle is another excellent way to explore Saranda’s surrounds.
The views of Saranda, the harbor, and the Ionian Sea, with Corfu in the horizon, are among the best from the castle. You can also see the Butrint Lake from the hill, which has a great view of the valley and mountain range on the opposite side. You may also stop at Natyra Restaurant, which has a wonderful view patio, on your way up or down.
You may visit Lekursi Castle for free even if you are not dining there. The castle was built in the form of a square with two circular towers facing each other in a diagonal orientation. The tower in the southeast corner (near the entrance) has the finest preservation and is roughly 7 meters tall. The castle’s walls are made of limestone and are roughly 2 meters thick, with a height of up to 7 meters. The walls formerly had a parapet with towers on top, which has been rebuilt in part.
The ruins of the former settlement of Lekuresi may still be seen around the castle, with the most of it located on the rear side of the castle, just in front of the entrance. Some 20th century artillery has also been displayed at the entry gate. Several distinct cold war bunkers may be found strewn throughout the hill.
The area was formerly part of the Himara region’s southern half. Ali Pasha of Ioannina besieged the fortress in the end of the 18th century, and the surrounding settlement was plundered.
