QTU – Qendra Tregtare Univers in Kashar, Albania

QTU – Qendra Tregtare Univers is one of Albania’s earliest modern shopping centers, located on the Tirana–Durrës highway in the Kashar area west of central Tirana. The center opened in 2005 and underwent a major €15 million redevelopment before reopening in an expanded form in December 2018. Current 2026 map data shows a large mix of fashion, electronics, food, beauty, home, jewelry, entertainment and service businesses, with Cineplexx and BO Bowling adding leisure uses beyond conventional shopping. QTU suits travelers with a car, families and longer-stay visitors who need practical retail outside the city center. Its main tradeoff is location: this is a highway shopping destination rather than a walkable sightseeing stop from Skanderbeg Square.

The locality requires a little explanation. QTU is widely marketed as a Tirana shopping center and uses the Tirana–Durrës highway address, but current Albanian business-registration data places Qendra Tregtare Univers in Kashar. Some map providers classify the surrounding area toward Bërxullë or Vorë because the complex sits near administrative boundaries. For route purposes, Kashar is the stronger official business-registration locality, while visitors can simply navigate to QTU on the highway.

QTU was significant because it helped introduce the large enclosed shopping-center format to Albania. Tirana Municipality describes it as the first center of its type in the country and says it developed into a major commercial destination. Its early success was later challenged by larger malls, which helps explain the extensive 2018 renovation.

The 2018 project changed more than the décor. Contemporary project reporting described structural reinforcement, the addition of new space and a redesign intended to bring more natural light, retail area and entertainment into the building. The investment was reported at approximately €15 million over a roughly 12-month redevelopment period. QTU reopened on 13 December 2018.

Current tenant data shows that the mall still covers a broad set of everyday needs. Google Maps’ 2026 directory lists more than twenty clothing retailers together with health and beauty shops, jewelry, home and kitchen businesses, electronics, food and drink and specialist services. Current named businesses include Neptun, Mango, New Yorker, OPA and other national and international brands. Tenant lists change, so visitors looking for one store should verify it immediately before traveling.

Food is more than a small café corner. Current listings show fast-food and restaurant options, while OPA and Burger King appear among current directory tenants. The exact mix can change, and travelers with dietary needs should check the individual businesses rather than expect a single mall-wide food policy.

Entertainment is one of QTU’s stronger family features. Cineplexx remains active and was publishing current September 2026 screenings. BO Bowling also operates at QTU with bowling and additional game or social options. These businesses make the mall useful for an indoor half-day during hot weather or rain, especially for families whose group does not want to spend the entire time shopping.

Opening hours are currently published consistently enough for planning. Google Maps lists QTU from 09:00 to 22:00 every day, while Apple Maps currently shows the same general daily range. Individual cinema screenings, restaurants and entertainment businesses may run on different schedules, so the mall’s opening time should not be treated as the final showtime or last food order.

The highway location makes private transport convenient. Parking is available around the center, although current public sources checked for this research cycle do not agree on a reliable total number of spaces or a universal parking tariff. Travelers driving a rental car should simply follow current on-site signage. A taxi from central Tirana is also practical, especially if several people share the fare.

Public transport can be possible along the Tirana–Durrës corridor, but the available current sources do not publish a simple mall-operated tourist shuttle. Visitors without a car should check a current local transit app or ask accommodation staff rather than rely on old mall-bus descriptions.

Accessibility is relatively well supported by map data, which lists wheelchair access for QTU. As with any large mall, specific lifts, toilets, cinema seating and individual stores can have different practical arrangements. Travelers with detailed requirements should contact the center or the specific entertainment venue.

There is no admission fee. A shopping-only stop may take one to two hours, while a cinema, bowling session and meal can turn QTU into a half-day outing. For tourists staying only in central Tirana, there may be no reason to make a special trip unless a particular shop or indoor activity is needed.

QTU is best understood as part of the modern commercial corridor west of Tirana rather than as a cultural attraction. Its value comes from retail variety, cinema and family entertainment, easy highway access and the historical role it played in Albania’s early mall development. Use the current store and cinema directories, allow for the Kashar location outside the center and choose QTU when practical shopping or indoor leisure matters more than sightseeing.
