Synagogue – Basilica, Archeological Remains are located in the heart of Saranda, between Rruga Sknderbeu and Rruga Onhezmi, next to the Friendship Park. The ruins are readily accessible on foot since Saranda is tiny. If you’re traveling from afar, the bus connecting Saranda’s ferry station and Butrint runs often. All other buses and minibuses also come to a halt just near to the ruins.
The ruins are the remnants of what was once the heart of a prosperous Jewish community in the region. Archaeological excavations of a 5th century synagogue complex and ancient Onhezmus basilica may be seen.
The building of the Christian basilica began in the 4th century BC, according to archaeologists, and it was subsequently converted into a synagogue towards the end of the 5th and beginning of the 6th centuries AD. Apart from religious activities, the structure has also served as a community center and a bible study school. According to archaeologists, the synagogue has been used at numerous times and was even turned into a Christian church at one point. What precisely caused the structures to be destroyed is unknown. Some believe it was destroyed by a Slavic invasion, while others say it was destroyed by an earthquake.
