Buôn Ma Thuột (formerly Lac Giao) or sometimes Buôn Mê Thuột or Ban Mê Thuột, is the capital city of Đắk Lắk Province in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. Its population increased from 420,000 in 2016 to 502,170 in 2018. The city is the largest in the Central Highlands region of Vietnam and is known as the “coffee capital” of the area.

Buôn Ma Thuột is served by Buôn Ma Thuột Airport.

Despite its seeming tranquility, Buon Ma Thuot is rapidly growing. However, the majority of this growth is due to domestic investment, not the tourism industry. There are very few tourist attractions, but the people are kind, the coffee is excellent, and a stay here is definitely worth it to go off the main path and see Vietnamese urban life that is not centered on tourism. It is also a superb location from which to explore Yok Don National Park, Ban Don Village, and Lak Lake.

At a height of 536 meters, Buon Ma Thuot is the provincial seat of Dak Lak and the largest city in Tay Nguyen.

The average annual temperature in the city is 23oC, making for a tranquil, temperate climate. In the language of the E-de ethnic group, Buon Ma Thuot (or Buon Ama Y Thuot) denotes the town of father Thuot, the guy who constructed the first settlement on the Ea Tam Stream’s bank.

Buon Ma Thuot was formerly the most vital region in Central Highlands. The city was the administrative, cultural, and economic hub of the whole area, with the largest population and the most sumptuous marketplaces. Buon Ma Thuot is the location where all routes linking Tay Nguyen’s provinces converge. The highways also perform an excellent job of connecting Dak Lak to Dalat City (through National Road 27), Khanh Hoa, Ninh Hoa (by National Road 26), and Ho Chi Minh City (via National Road 14), among other cities.

Buon Ma Thuot is renowned for a variety of fruits, vegetables, and coffee in particular! Vietnam Market has been dominated by Buon Ma Thuot coffee for a long time, therefore it is not unexpected that it has no competitors.

Dray Sap, Dray Anour, and Dray H’ling, to mention a few, are breathtaking waterfalls that visitors to Buon Ma Thuot may view. They may really enjoy journeys to the communities of the E-de and M’nong ethnic groups to experience the essences of the Gong Festival, ride an elephant during a hunt in the mystical jungles, or simply relax on a piragua and inhale the air of the Asian wilderness.

In addition to the historic structures, the majority of which are meticulously constructed wooden homes, locals consider it vital to develop more innovative and contemporary structures. Thus, if you visit Buon Ma Thuat now, you will notice broad roads lined with green trees and gorgeous flowers, as well as a large number of recently built apartment complexes. However, the most essential activity in Buon Ma Thuot is simply sipping coffee! The Basalt of Dak Lak enables the city to cultivate Robusta Coffee better than anywhere else on earth. Buon Ma Thuot Coffee has mesmerized both domestic and international consumers for decades.

Ako Dhong (buôn Cô Thôn in Vietnamese): An E-de minority community in the far north of BMT. It’s walkable, but first inquire how to get there. It’s a charming area of town with longhouses surrounded by floral yards, although now being part of town it can’t truly be termed a village any more. Perhaps ‘longhouse suburbia’ is a better term.

Lak Lake. the mother lake of the Central Highlands.

Dray Nur waterfall (30 km by taxi from Buon Ma Thuot). Beautiful waterfalls and leisure area, especially during the wet season.

Fast development and not much tourism infrastructure mean that the guidebooks are behind the times and badly deceptive. A walk immediately northwest of the major roundabout after roughly 18:00 will yield up a very wonderful assortment of street stalls and tiny restaurants, serving up extremely good staples such as hủ tiếu, phở, bún, cơm, and nem. Ly Thuong Kiet adjacent has a variety of roll-your-own spring roll places.

A very excellent cm hn, a Hue specialty, is offered across the street from the Co-op Mart at a simple-looking establishment that also promotes Bn b Hu. Pass through the dingy front room and into a stunning small back house complete with garden, birds, and an indoor waterfall.

History

When the French founded the province of Djok Lok in 1904, Buon Ma Thuot—rather than the Srepok River commerce hub of Giona—was selected as the location of the province’s administrative hub. Less than 15% (about 40,000) of Buon Ma Thuot’s population now are still Montagnards, despite the fact that the E Ghe originally called the area home. This is because of the Viet settlement that followed the Vietnam War and strong acculturation efforts. There was a significant fight fought near the end of the Vietnam War.
