Charlotte is the county seat of Mecklenburg County and the most populous city in the United States state of North Carolina. Trail only Jacksonville, Florida; Charlotte ranks as the 15th-most populous city in the United States, the seventh-most populous in the South, and the second-most populous in the Southeast, with a population of 874,579 as recorded in the 2020 census. With an estimated population of 2,805,115 in 2023, this energetic city is the cultural, financial, and transportation hub of the Charlotte metropolitan area, ranked 22nd in the nation. Comprising an estimated 3,387,115 as of 2023, the larger Charlotte metropolitan area is part of an 18-county market region and combined statistical area.
Charlotte’s explosive development is impressive. Rising among the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the United States, the city welcomed 889,000 additional people between 2004 and 2014. Based on 2005 to 2015 census figures, Charlotte ranks as the top American city in millennial population increase. Right now, it ranks third fastest-growing major city in the country. Along with the East Coast headquarters of Wells Fargo, the city is a major financial center housing the corporate offices of Bank of America and Truist Financial. Together with other Charlotte-based financial companies, these establishments present the city as the second-largest banking center in the country.
