The National Archaeological Museum (Albanian: Muzeu Arkeologjik Kombtar) opened in Tirana, Albania on 1 November 1948. It was the country’s first museum established after World War II. It is situated east of Mother Teresa Square, close to Tirana University.
This museum, which established in 1948, now houses research on archaeological findings made around Albania. It is linked with the Albanian Academy of Sciences’ institute of archaeology. The Museum has exhibits spanning the time periods of the Prehistoric and Classical periods through the Middle Ages and Modern eras. Over 2000 objects are on exhibit, ranging from antique jewelry to Roman sculptures to large clay jars covered with shellfish discovered during the museum’s many archaeological field missions. Additionally, it is responsible for several archaeological excursions around the nation and serves as the parent institution for several other museums, including the Durrs Archaeological Museum. Additionally, the Museum has a library with around 7200 books.
The museum’s 2000 objects span the following epochs: the Stone Age from 100.000 to 2000 BC, the Bronze and Iron Ages from 2000 to 800 BC, the Illyrian Origins from around 1000 BC, Illyrian Antiquity from 1000 BC to 100 AD, the Roman and Byzantine Civilisations in Albania from 100 to 600 AD, and Albania in the Middle Ages and Ottoman rule from 600 to 1912.
