Mosaic of Tirana

Location
Tirana, Albania
Description

The Tirana Mosaic is a well-known Albanian monument that is supposed to have been part of a third-century Roman palace. It is Tirana’s earliest known artefact, and it ornamented the villa’s basement. A church was erected on this location in the fifth and sixth century. In 1972, the remnants of this Palaeo-Christian Basilica were discovered. In 1973, the mosaic was designated as a cultural monument. Today, the Byzantine church exhibits some of the old mosaics uncovered at the site, which include a variety of geometrical designs as well as fowl and fish. On January 23, 2010, the facility reopened to the public. It is also known as the St George’s Church Mosaic.
