By Train

Tirana Train Station – There are no international rail connections in Tirana. The Tirana Train Terminal was temporarily relocated to Kashar in September 2013 while a new multi-modal station being developed in Tirana. In May 2015, the Kashar station was restored and reopened. Buses transport passengers between Tirana and Kashar. HSH sh.a. operates trains from the following cities: Durres (100 lek, one hour, eight times per day), Shkodra (160 lek, 3.5 hours, twice per day), Elbasan (200 lek, 4 hours, three times per day), Vlor (210 lek, 5.5 hours, twice per day in the summer only), and Pogradec (350 lek, 4 hours, twice daily – discontinued in 2012).

Even if railway services are inadequate, according to West Balkan norms, they may be more frequent, less expensive, and more picturesque than bus travel. It is not suggested to take the train to Elbasan since the four-hour journey takes a significant detour through Durres, which is not very picturesque, and Elbasan is just 35 kilometers from Tirana.

There is no central bus terminal in Tirana, therefore you may be dropped off at numerous points across the city. Tirana is accessible by bus from other cities in Albania and from outside. From Turkey, Serbia, Macedonia, and Athens (Greece), there are many daily bus routes to Pristina (Kosovo) and other places in Albania. Check the most up-to-date information at your point of departure, since schedules change regularly.

Buses depart from Skopje, Ohrid, and Struga in Macedonia. The times of departure from Tirana are 15:00 and 17:00.

Take a bus or cab from Montenegro to Ulcinj, then another bus or taxi to Shkodra, Albania, crossing the border at Muriqan. Frequent buses depart Shkodra towards Tirana.

From downtown, buses to and from Kosovo leave (behind museum where one also can find buses to Rinas airport)

Buses and furgons (minibuses) are the most convenient way to travel inside Albania, despite their poor condition. There are few bus companies; the majority of buses are run by independent drivers. There are timetables for bus routes, although they are sometimes delayed until the coaches are full or at the driver’s discretion. Some international bus terminals are located distant from the city center; thus, it may be advantageous to take a cab to the bus stop in order to save time and prevent getting lost.

By Car

To calculate and reserve your trip, use the Taxi Trip Calculator by MerrTaxi Tirana, the largest taxi business in Albania, which operates in the capital city around-the-clock and always uses a meter. Use the national free phone number 0800 5555 or the international phone number +355 67400 6610 to summon a cab.

Taxis to the border may also be arranged by your hotel, although they are often more costly. MerrTaxi Tirana estimates that a cab ride from Tirana to the Macedonian border will take three hours and cost around €90. A Macedonian cab from the border to Struga should cost no more than €6 (December 2009) and take no more than 20 minutes, but a taxi to Skopje would take three hours on considerably better roads and cost around €120. (Prices January 2008). Passport control will take around thirty minutes.

By boat

Tirana lacks a port, hence it cannot be reached directly by sea. There are, however, viable water connections from Italy (from the ports of Bari, Trieste, and Ancona) to Durrs, the closest port to Tirana, from where you may take a bus or minivan to the Albanian capital. Additionally, you might hire a vehicle or take a cab to reach Tirana in around 20 minutes.
