Sagalassos Ancient City (Turkish: Sagalassos Antik Kenti) is a major archaeological ruin in southwestern Turkey. It became the metropolis (capital) of the Roman province of Pisidia and Alexander the Great captured it in 333 BCE. The site is sometimes called the \u201cCity of Fountains\u201d for its many monumental waterworks. Excavations from 1990 onward uncovered and restored key structures such as the Neon Library, a Heroon tomb, a Hellenistic fountain and the Antonine Fountain. The city stretches over steep terraces with a remarkably intact collection of monuments: a vast Roman theater (capacity ~7,000), twin agoras, colonnaded streets and ornate baths. It is listed on UNESCO\u2019s Tentative World Heritage List for its exceptional preservation of urban design. The Turkish Ministry of Culture designates it as Sagalassos \u00d6renyeri (archaeological site).<\/p>

Sagalassos sits in K\u0131ra\u00e7 village (K\u0131ra\u00e7 Mah.), A\u011flasun district of Burdur Province. This is in Turkey\u2019s Lake District of the Mediterranean region. The site is about 7 km north of A\u011flasun town and 44 km north of Burdur city. It lies 110 km north of Antalya (road) and 30 km east of Isparta. GPS: ~37\u00b040\u2032N, 30\u00b031\u2032E. Postal address: K\u0131ra\u00e7 Mah., 15800 A\u011flasun\/Burdur, Turkey. The road from A\u011flasun climbs steeply up to 1,500 m, with views over Lake Burdur along the way.<\/p>

Sagalassos spreads across wooded slopes with dramatic mountain views. Visitors encounter a restored Antonine Fountain with flowing water, wide agoras and a long colonnaded street flanked by standing columns. Above these plazas a huge Roman theater climbs the hill. Other structures \u2013 temples, baths, libraries \u2013 lie in ruins nearby. Stone walls, carved capitals and mosaic floors are exposed to the elements, giving a tactile feel to the ancient city. With few crowds, one can often walk among fallen blocks and statues in near silence. Because paths use natural terraces, visitors must climb stone steps and ramps; comfortable shoes are recommended.<\/p>

The Burdur Museum Directorate runs the site and keeps it open daily. Current hours are roughly 08:30\u201319:00 (April\u2013Oct) and 08:30\u201317:00 (Nov\u2013Mar) (last entry ~30 minutes before close). Visitors pay about \u20ac8 (200\u202fTL) each, and children under 8 enter free; Turkish M\u00fczeKart holders are admitted without charge. The visitor center (Kar\u015f\u0131lama Merkezi) at the top of the road houses the ticket booth, a small exhibit area, a caf\u00e9 and a gift shop. Basic facilities include an on-site parking area (otopark) and restrooms (tuvalet). Information panels in Turkish and English mark the main ruins. Licensed guides can be hired in A\u011flasun, but most travelers follow self-guided paths or hire a private guide in the town. A night lighting project is underway for 2026, which will allow guided evening visits after dark. Photography is allowed on site (drones require permission); visitors should respect barriers and not climb on fragile structures.<\/p>

Highway D330 runs from Burdur toward Antalya; at A\u011flasun one turns north toward K\u0131ra\u00e7. The signposted mountain road ascends ~7 km to the Sagalassos visitor center (at 1500 m elevation) where parking is available. Buses and minibuses (dolmu\u015f) connect Burdur or Isparta to A\u011flasun; from A\u011flasun\u2019s minibus terminal take a local dolmu\u015f or taxi up the hill to Sagalassos. A\u011flasun itself has only basic lodging and cafes; for more options use nearby Burdur or Isparta (~45 km away). No rail service is nearby. The nearest airports are Antalya (~110 km) and Isparta\/SDU (~70 km), both requiring onward travel by road. The mountain road is narrow and winding; winter snows may block access.<\/p>

Only the visitor center has wheelchair access; the rest of the site lies on steep, rocky slopes. Visitors must climb uneven stone steps and dirt paths to reach the ruins, so neither wheelchairs nor strollers can navigate the ancient city. Benches at shaded spots near the fountains offer rest, but much of the city is exposed to the sun. Accessible restrooms are at the entrance. Because the area is an active excavation site, uneven surfaces are common.<\/p>

The site is moderately family-friendly. Children may enjoy the open ruins and fountain areas, but must be supervised on the steep steps and uneven ground. Strollers and wheelchairs cannot navigate most of the ancient city. Toilets and a snack bar at the entrance help families. Many parents spend 2\u20133 hours here; older children often find the hilltop setting adventurous.<\/p>

Sagalassos rarely feels crowded. Spring and autumn are ideal (mild weather, wildflowers) for visiting. Summer days get very hot, so visiting early or late is wise. Winter can bring cold rains or snow at this altitude. Weekdays are generally quiet; weekends or local holidays may add small tour groups. Photographers find soft light in morning and evening; visitors often have much of the site to themselves. Shade is scarce on the ruins, so sun protection is important.<\/p>

Sagalassos rewards history and archaeology enthusiasts. Its grand monuments (theater, fountains, agoras) are comparable to those at Ephesus or Hierapolis, yet the site remains largely off the typical tourist path. Many visitors praise its sense of authenticity and quiet setting. However, the remote highland location and rugged terrain require extra effort to reach, including winding roads and uphill walks. Those seeking modern amenities may prefer more accessible sites (such as Aspendos near Antalya). Overall, Sagalassos is worth the visit for travelers who appreciate well-preserved ruins and scenic mountain panoramas.<\/p>

Visitors should plan at least 2\u20133 hours to see the main highlights (agoras, theater, fountain, library). Enthusiasts or photographers often spend 4\u20135 hours exploring side areas (temples, baths, necropolis). Walking the entire site (covering ~400 acres) can easily fill a half day. Trails total several kilometers, so allow time for breaks. Many guidebooks recommend 3\u20134 hours for a thorough visit.<\/p>

In the Upper Agora visitors find the ornate Antonine Fountain and the Neon Library\u2019s mosaic floor. A colonnaded main street (S\u00fctunlu Cadde) leads past a Roman bath and market hall (macellum). High above lies a large Roman theater. Other ruins include a domed temple, the Heroon mausoleum and cliffside tombs (nekropol). Plaques and a site map guide visitors through these areas.
