Alanya Castle (Alanya Kalesi) is a medieval hilltop fortress at the heart of Alanya, Antalya Province in Turkey\u2019s Mediterranean region. This sprawling open-air museum covers about 10 hectares of rocky peninsula protected by roughly 6\u20136.5 km of stone walls. It stands at about 250 meters above sea level and dates mainly to the 13th-century Seljuk Sultanate of Rum, when Sultan I. Alaeddin Keykubad I captured and rebuilt the city (then called Alaiye or Kalonoros) around 1221. Earlier Romans, Byzantines and even pirates also occupied the site, so the ruins show layers of history. Today the site is managed by Turkey\u2019s Culture Ministry as a historic ruin complex. Alanya Castle on UNESCO\u2019s tentative list is commonly known simply as Alanya Kalesi (with \u201ckale\u201d and \u201chisar\u201d meaning castle or fortress in Turkish).<\/p>

The fortress lies at the southwestern tip of Alanya on a headland between Cleopatra Beach (Kleopatra Plaj\u0131) and the old harbor. The address is Hisar\u0131\u00e7i Mahallesi, Kale Cd. No:12, 07400 Alanya\/Antalya. It is about 137 km east of Antalya city by highway, and about 2.5 km south from Alanya\u2019s city center (H\u00fcrriyet Square). GPS coordinates are roughly 36.533\u00b0N, 31.991\u00b0E. Nearby landmarks include the Red Tower (K\u0131z\u0131l Kule) and the historic shipyard (Tersane) at the peninsula\u2019s foot on the east side, and the famous Damlata\u015f Cave and Cleopatra Beach on the west side. Alanya is on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey (Akdeniz B\u00f6lgesi). The castle\u2019s base is in the old city (Hisari\u00e7i) quarter of Alanya district.<\/p>

The site today feels like a large ruined citadel on a rocky promontory. Its massive stone walls (partly restored in places) run along the ridge and are punctuated by about 140 towers and watchtowers. These walls once enclosed the entire peninsula. Inside, the ground is uneven limestone with remnants of Seljuk and Byzantine buildings. There are no intact grand halls; instead one finds foundations, low stone walls and a few weathered rooms. Dozens of water cisterns (ancient wells) dot the courtyards, and steps climb between levels. The Eastern (seaward) side of the hill is steep and wild; the gentler Western slopes had most buildings. The castle feels exposed and largely open to the sky, with little tree cover or shade. Visitors move along exposed stone paths and stairways; some sections have loose gravel or wet, slippery patches. The atmosphere is breezy and quiet, dominated by sea views. By contrast, the lower slopes outside the walls support Turkey oak and pine trees, and shaded gardens near the cable car station.<\/p>

To visit, go through the main southern gate. Alanya Castle is open daily year-round. Summer hours (roughly April 1\u2013Oct 1) are about 8:30\u201319:00 (ticket booth closes 30 minutes earlier); in winter about 8:30\u201317:30, as confirmed by official museum hours. There is a single ticket office at the gate. The foreign visitor fee is roughly \u20ac12 (Turkish Museum Pass\/M\u00fczeKart is valid here) and discounts apply for locals and students. Tickets cover both the Inner Fortress (\u0130\u00e7 Kale) and the northern Ehmedek section. No advance booking or reservation is needed. A modest visitor kiosk and sometimes an information panel exist at the entrance, but beyond that facilities are minimal. The cable car (Alanya Teleferik) from near Damlata\u015f Cave brings tourists up to the fortress plateau; it runs daily 09:30\u201323:00. Otherwise, local minibuses (dolmu\u015f) and city buses (e.g. route #4 from the city center) run up to the Teleferik base and main gate. Tourists often take bus 4 from H\u00fcrriyet Square (Friday Market area) up the hill to the castle. A taxi costs about \u20ac10 one-way from downtown to the gate. Drivers climb a 3 km winding road from near Cleopatra Beach; parking is very limited along it. Visitors can also walk: a marked stone path from Damlata\u015f (Cleopatra) Beach leads up to the castle gate, taking perhaps 45\u201360 minutes in good weather. Inside the castle there are no elevators or ramps \u2013 mobility-impaired visitors rely on the cable car, which reaches the Ehmedek fortress, but moving around on rough stone paths remains challenging. There is no on-site museum shop or caf\u00e9; bring water. Public toilets and a small caf\u00e9 are available at the Teleferik station at the base, but none on the castle top. Basic signage explains major ruins, but additional guidebooks or tours can add context. Occasional archaeological digs (led by Antalya museum teams) are visible on site; for example a Seljuk palace hall was partially excavated in the inner fortress in the 2010s.<\/p>

Is the castle worth visiting? For many travelers it is. Alanya Castle is one of the largest intact medieval fortresses in Turkey, with commanding views and rich history. History and architecture enthusiasts will appreciate the scale of its walls and the Seljuk-period remains (palace, hammam, etc.). Walks along the ramparts provide panoramas of Alanya\u2019s coastline and city. On the other hand, those expecting a restored palace or museum indoors may be disappointed; much of the site is in ruin, so it appeals most to heritage-minded visitors. It\u2019s physically demanding, so people with limited mobility or young children might prefer a shorter outing (e.g. just to the Red Tower and old town). Crowds are usually moderate: early morning or late afternoon are best to avoid midday heat and to capture the light. Weekends and summer days bring more locals and cruise visitors. Overall, if you have an interest in medieval castles or want broad views over Alanya, the castle generally delivers \u2014 but it\u2019s not a \u201ctheme park\u201d experience. If pressed for time, some visitors skip it in favor of Alanya\u2019s lower attractions (like Damlata\u015f Cave or the K\u0131z\u0131lkule) and only climb for sunset.<\/p>

The site can be enjoyed by families, but with caveats. The open ruins and walkways are adventure-like for older kids, and the cable car is usually a hit. However, parents should be aware that the climb involves many steps and the terrain is uneven; strollers and wheelchairs cannot go beyond the gate. Bring sun hats and water, as shaded areas are scarce. Facilities for children (playgrounds, etc.) do not exist here \u2014 it\u2019s purely a historical park. On the positive side, curious children can spot cisterns, towers, and the fallen stones of ancient walls. Some families turn it into a history scavenger hunt with guidebooks. The castle is quiet enough that kids can roam a bit, but they must be supervised on the walls and stairs. There are no rules against photography, so families often take advantage of the castle\u2019s vistas and views for photos.<\/p>

Parking at Alanya Castle is very limited. There is no large parking lot at the fortress itself. The easiest car parking is at the Teleferik (cable car) station in G\u00fczelyal\u0131, just below the castle\u2019s western foot; that lot fills up quickly in summer. Street parking near Damlata\u015f Cave (on Atat\u00fcrk Boulevard by Kleopatra Beach) is another option, but it requires the uphill hike or bus to the gate. Given narrow hillside roads and heavy tourist traffic, many visitors prefer to use public transit or taxi. The winding entrance road (about 3 km from the beach) has a few pull-offs, but they are often full. In summer mornings it helps to arrive early or use the cable car to avoid parking hassles.<\/p>

How long should you plan? A quick \u201csummit and back\u201d trip \u2013 say by teleferik up and down \u2013 can be done in under 2 hours. However, a thorough visit to both the Inner Fortress and Ehmedek area generally takes 2\u20134 hours. Guidebooks suggest spending at least 3 hours to fully explore the walls and ruins. In practice, many visitors spend 2\u20133 hours walking the key sections at a relaxed pace (including breaks for photos and rest). Hiking up on foot from the base adds another hour or so one-way. Plan more time if you want to sit at viewpoints or visit every cistern and inscription. Avoid rushing; the castle\u2019s magnitude rewards a slow exploration.<\/p>

Visitors to Alanya Castle will see an impressive array of ruins and features. The massive perimeter walls \u2013 snaking around the ridge \u2013 with dozens of surviving towers, are the first sight. Walking along them (parts have been rebuilt) provides sweeping views over the Mediterranean Sea to the west and over Alanya town and harbor to the east. Just inside the walls, the most prominent ruin is the Byzantine-era Church of St. George (Aya Yorgi), a 10th-12th century church now roofless, with rough stone walls and a well where monks once gathered water. Nearby are large vaulted cisterns (sarn\u0131\u00e7) that once stored rainwater for the garrison. Close to the entrance stands a small caf\u00e9\/visitor booth (outside the medieval complex) but none above. On the eastern approach is the octagonal Red Tower (K\u0131z\u0131l Kule), a separate Seljuk defense tower by the harbor (often viewed from below). At the northern end of the castle hill are the ruins of the Ehmedek Fortress and its S\u00fcleymaniye Camii \u2013 you can walk here from the castle. The Ehmedek area shows remains of Seljuk barracks, an arsenal, and even prison dungeons used in Ottoman times. It\u2019s an excellent lookout toward Alanya\u2019s mountain backdrop. Within the castle complex, ongoing archaeology has revealed parts of Sultan Keykubad\u2019s palace (such as a ruined hall and bath foundations), which visitors can glimpse roped off. Information panels in Turkish and English explain certain sites, but much interpretation relies on guidebooks. Outside the castle, as you descend, terraces and pathways pass by other old monuments (for example the restored Arap Evliya T\u00fcrbesi tomb and Tophane quarter).<\/p>

In summary, Alanya Castle is a large medieval fortress in southern Turkey\u2019s Antalya Province (Alanya city), set on a rocky peninsula surrounded by sea.
