Perge Antik Kenti (Ancient City of Perge) is a large archaeological site on the Pamphylian plain about 17\u202fkm east of Antalya city center. It preserves the remains of an ancient planned city that dates back to at least the Bronze Age. The town was laid out in the Hellenistic era (3rd c.\u202fBC) and reached its peak under Roman rule (2nd\u20133rd c.\u202fAD), when its streets were re-laid in marble and grand buildings were added. Today visitors encounter those Roman-era ruins: a 15,000-seat theatre, a 12,000-seat stadium, city gates, a market (agora and macellum), public baths (hamamlar) and monumental fountains. Perge\u2019s clearly legible city plan and well-preserved architecture have earned it a place on UNESCO\u2019s World Heritage Tentative List as a top Anatolian ruin.<\/p>

The site lies in Antalya Province\u2019s Aksu district, officially at \u201cBarbaros Mahallesi, Perge Yolu, 07112\u202fAksu\/Antalya,\u201d on the Mediterranean coast of southwestern Turkey. It sits on the Pamphylian coastal plain beside the Aksu River. Perge is about 17\u201318\u202fkm (roughly 20\u201325\u202fminutes\u2019 drive) east of Antalya\u2019s Kalei\u00e7i old town, and about 2\u202fkm north of the modern town of Aksu. It is reached by turning off the D400 coastal highway onto Perge Road in the village of Barbaros. Antalya Airport is only about 20\u202fkm to the west. Visitors without a car can take the Antalya Antray tram (T1B Expo line) to the Aksu station and then walk or taxi ~1.5\u20132\u202fkm to the site. Aksu-bound dolmu\u015f minibuses also depart from central Antalya. (The site\u2019s official coordinates are roughly 36.9605\u00b0\u202fN, 30.8540\u00b0\u202fE.) Despite being outside the city center, Perge is well-signed in Turkish and English once you turn off the highway.<\/p>

Perge today feels like walking through the ruins of an ancient stone city under a bright open sky. The terrain is almost entirely flat and the footpaths are broad and gravelly. There are almost no trees, so the pale marble pavement bakes in the sun. Visitors enter through a modern gatehouse (with ticket office) and follow numbered paths past ruins. A long colonnaded boulevard (one time carrying water in a central channel) runs straight from the gate toward the city\u2019s agora and theatre. Along this spine are fragments of tall columns, mosaic pavements (often protected by wooden walkways) and the bases of fountains. To the north stand the twin Hellenistic gate towers, and to the south lie the vast Roman theatre (currently fenced off for restoration) and the oval stadium. Because the layout is level and clearly marked, most visitors find Perge\u2019s city grid easy to follow. Perge is open to the public every day. According to the Antalya Museum (which administers the site), normal hours are about 08:00\u201320:00 or 21:00 depending on the season, with the ticket booth closing roughly 30 minutes earlier. The entrance kiosk accepts Turkish MuseumPass cards and M\u00fczeKart for Turkish citizens, while other visitors pay a modest fee (around \u20ac11 or \u2248\u20ba300). On the other hand, Perge is a very open, expansive site, and that has trade-offs. The wide layout means it is seldom as crowded as some famous sites (visitors often find it quieter than nearby Aspendos), but it also means you spend more time walking in the sun. In summer the heat can be intense \u2013 many guides warn that midday on Perge\u2019s pale stones can be punishing. Visit reports suggest at least 2\u20133 hours to see the main highlights, so it\u2019s best done in the cooler morning or late afternoon. In practice Perge is often included on a day tour of Antalya\u2019s sites \u2013 for example, many trips combine it with the Roman theatre at Aspendos (30\u202fkm east) and other nearby sights. Overall it is generally recommended for travelers interested in ancient sites; casual tourists on a tight schedule or with very young children should balance the long walk and heat against their itinerary. (For context, Perge is one of several classical ruins in Antalya \u2013 the Aspendos theatre and Side\u2019s amphitheatre are not far away, and Antalya\u2019s Old Town and museums are to the west \u2013 but Perge is unique for preserving a whole Roman city layout in the Antalya region.)<\/p>

That said, there is no playground or shade, so parents should plan carefully: bring sunscreen, hats, water and snacks, and allow for breaks on benches or at the entrance caf\u00e9. With preparation, many families find Perge a good outing, but very young kids may prefer shorter activities if the sun is high.<\/p>

Yes \u2013 Perge has its own parking lot. A large unpaved car park sits right by the ancient city\u2019s entrance. It typically holds cars, minibuses and even tourist coaches, and there is no formal fee (most visitors park for free or a small tip). In high season the lot can fill up by late morning, but overflow parking is usually available on nearby village roads. A drop-off area at the entrance lets taxis or tour buses let passengers out right at the gate. In short, drivers will find plenty of parking close to the site, and traffic in the area is light except for occasional summer tour buses.<\/p>

Visitors generally spend a couple of hours at Perge. Most guides recommend allowing 2\u20133 hours to walk the main route and see the principal ruins. If you\u2019re just tagging highlights, one could glimpse the theatre, stadium and agora in about an hour, but that means hurrying past other features. A thorough visit (with time for reading panels or photography) can take 3\u20134 hours or more. Because entry covers all day, some people arrive early and linger into late afternoon for better light and cooler conditions. Overall, plan on a half-day for Perge. Those on a tight schedule might combine it with other Antalya sights or save it for a morning when crowds and heat are lower.<\/p>

In practice, visitors see almost the entire ancient city. Along the main avenue you will find the carved remains of columns and a central water channel. Key monuments include: the two tall towers of the Hellenistic North Gate; the monumental Roman city gate (Hadrian\u2019s Arch) at the entrance; and the open agora (market square) and adjacent macellum (bazaar). Beyond the forum are the foundation of the palaestra (gymnasium). On the south side lie the huge Roman theatre and the long oval stadium (once seating some 12,000). The ornate stone bath complex (with surviving mosaic floors) and decorative fountains (including the Nymphaeum of Septimius Severus and the Caracalla fountain) are clearly visible. Scattered among the ruins are statue pedestals, sarcophagus fragments and inscriptions.
