Phaselis Koyu (Phaselis Bay) is an ancient Lycian harbour city (antik kent) on the Mediterranean coast, located in Tekirova (\u00c7amyuva Mahallesi) of Kemer district, Antalya Province. Founded by Rhodian Greeks around 690\u202fBC, it later flourished under Roman and Byzantine rule. The open-air archaeological site contains temples, agoras, baths, a one-arched Hadrianic gate, aqueduct sections and necropoleis. It is managed by the Turkish Ministry of Culture (Antalya Museum) as a first-degree protected \u00f6ren yeri. Phaselis today blends pine forest and ruins, with warm coastal views and a secure, shallow bay.<\/p>

Phaselis stands in T\u00fcrkiye\u2019s Mediterranean Region on the D-400 highway (57th\u202fkm), about 16\u202fkm south of Kemer town. The exact location is Tekirova, 07995 Kemer\/Antalya. It lies between the Bey Mountains and Olympos National Park. The site\u2019s coordinates are roughly 36.5236\u00b0\u202fN, 30.5522\u00b0\u202fE. From Antalya city centre, the drive is about 50\u201360\u202fkm west (\u22481\u202fhour). Its proximity to resorts like Kemer and Tekirova makes it a popular excursion. The peninsular site looks out over three natural harbours (Kuzey Liman\u0131, G\u00fcney Liman\u0131, \u0130\u00e7 Liman).<\/p>

The visitor experience is casually scenic and outdoors. Paths wind through shaded pine woods toward the ruins. Ancient marble roads (s\u00fctunlu cadde) and stone steps lead from the entrance down to the northern bathing harbour. Remains of colonnades, mosaic floors (in a latrine and bath), and oil-press channels appear among pines. The southern bay is reached via an arched portal (Hadrian\u2019s Gate) on the ancient street. Natural light bathes white stone walls \u2013 bring sun protection. Signage is basic and multilingual brochures are rare, so many visitors follow numbered posts or hire a local rehberli tur. In spring the site is green with wildflowers; in summer it is hot with deep blue sea. Slippery stones and uneven ground require solid shoes. The ruins are largely ruins \u2013 no large indoor museum, but there is a small exhibition at the caf\u00e9 by the entrance.<\/p>

For transport, local dolmu\u015f minibuses run from Kemer or Antalya via Tekirova, dropping visitors near the entrance. From Antalya the Bati Antalya Tur coach can also reach Tekirova (approximately 2\u20133 hours). By car or taxi the D-400 highway exit for Tekirova leads directly to the site (ample free otopark is on site). If you arrive by cruise boat at Antalya or Kekova, note that a road connection still requires a bus\/taxi from Antalya.<\/p>

Phaselis is generally considered worth a visit if you enjoy culture by the coast. Its unique blend of coastal scenery and ruins is often praised. The tranquil pine-fringed bays allow a swim after touring the antiquities. Visitors note the well-preserved features \u2013 especially the aqueduct, theatre and mosaics \u2013 as highlights. The crowds are moderate by Antalya standards, though summer weekends fill parking early. Its entry fee is comparable to other Antalya sites. Compared to major urban attractions (like Istanbul\u2019s Topkap\u0131 or \u0130zmir\u2019s Kadifekale), Phaselis is smaller but offers direct beach access. On a family vacation in Antalya it is often recommended as an attractive half-day outing, but travelers on short schedules focused on Ottoman or Byzantine sites might skip it.<\/p>

For families, Phaselis can be convenient and safe. The sheltered North Harbour beach is shallow and calm, ideal for children to wade and paddle. Parents can combine the day between lounging on the sand and exploring gentle ruins. Picnic tables and toilets near the north bay add comfort. However, some sections require walking on uneven stone or climbing steps (to reach the theater or acropolis hill), so strollers and wheelchairs are limited to flatter zones. Young children should be watched near heights and water. Overall, most families with kids age 5+ find Phaselis rewarding due to the swimming bays and open space.<\/p>

Yes \u2013 parking is provided. A broad gravel lot sits just inside the main entrance; use of it is generally free. On busy days the lot fills by mid-morning, so early arrival is advised. Tour buses and dolmu\u015f minibuses also use this area. Drop-off by taxi or dolmu\u015f is at the ticket office. There are no multistory garages or paid lots beyond this; the site\u2019s car park is the main one.<\/p>

Plan on 2\u20133 hours to see Phaselis comfortably. Strolling the length of all three harbours, the theatre and the elevated necropoleis takes roughly 1.5\u20132 hours at a normal pace. Swimming, a picnic or extra photos add another hour or two. In practice many visitors spend half a day, especially with lunch or boat tours. A quick visit to hit the major ruins can be done in 60\u201390 minutes, but this skips much of the shoreline and distant tombs. Allow extra time on peak days due to crowds and entry queues.<\/p>

Visitors will see a wide range of ruins and settings. At the harbor entrance stands a partially restored Roman aqueduct with its fountain; this marks the spot of an old temple podium. Nearby is a Domitian-era agora and the remains of a public bath (its mosaic floor still visible). Walking northward, a broad 24-meter marble road (colonnaded in antiquity) leads through a single-arch Hadrianic gate to the southern harbour. Along this main street are broken columns of shops and a lane of stone latrines (with preserved mosaic slabs). Up the slope you reach a Hadrianic plaza (tetragonal agora) and the open-air Roman theater with about 1,500 seats. The theatre\u2019s upper rows and stage now provide panoramas over the pine-covered peninsula. Scattered across the site are stone sarcophagi and rock-cut lyre player tombs of the necropolis. All three bays \u2013 North, South and Inner \u2013 are visible and fringed by ruins. Panoramic points (seyir noktas\u0131) at the southern peninsula wall and northern beach give classic views.<\/p>

In sum, Phaselis offers column fragments, mosaic floors, temple foundations (kitabe fragments on pedestals), a fortress aqueduct and hillside tombs \u2013 all in a seaside setting \u2013 rather than extensive standing architecture. But the condition is good enough for interpretation; many slabs and inscriptions (kitabe) lie in place. The site has no on-site museum, so no major artifacts to see indoors. Visitors often compare it most to sites like Olympos (nearby) or Sagalassos (inland) for Lycian ruins, or Mediterranean harbor sites; but Phaselis is unique in having its excavated agora and baths right above a beach.
