Atakum Beach (Turkish: Atakum Plajı) is a public sandy beach on the Black Sea coast of Samsun Province. Located in the Mimarsinan neighborhood of Atakum district, this Blue Flag beach (also called Nazar Plajı) lies along the Samsun–Sinop coastal highway. It features a broad, gently sloping sand bottom and usually calm water. The entire Atakum shoreline has been developed as a public recreation zone (with bike paths, playgrounds and sports areas), and there are no private coves or hotels between the promenade and sea. The Turkish Blue Flag program confirms that Nazar (Atakum) Beach has held the award each year from 2019 through 2025.
Atakum Beach lies about 8.5 km (≈20 min drive) east of central Samsun, at the western edge of the Atakum residential area. It is addressed on Adnan Menderes Bulvarı near the Mimarsinan quarter. Parking lots run behind the sand. The Samsun bus network (for example lines 12H, E1, E5, 12 and others) runs along the coastal road, and the Samsun tram terminates at the nearby Türk-İş station (about 350 m from the beach). A seasonal ferry (SamsunUm 1) connects to the Çobanlı pier within a 5 min walk. A paved seaside promenade stretches east and west from the beach, linking it to other local beaches (Denizkızı, Gençlik, etc.) and dozens of cafes and restaurants. Guidebooks often compare the lights and cafes along this shore to İzmir’s Kordon, noting the long lit boardwalk and family‐friendly atmosphere.
The sand on Atakum Beach is fine and the shoreline is very long (hundreds of meters). The sea entry is flat and sandy with no rocks or coarse gravel. Water depth increases slowly – it remains waist-deep only after many meters out, making it safe for children. Waves are usually low, but the Black Sea can become choppy on windy days (especially in spring/fall). In summer months (June–August) the water warms into the mid-20s °C, allowing comfortable swimming by late June. Lifeguards and first-aid stations are on duty during the high season. Public facilities include toilets, showers and changing cabins. Concrete umbrellas and rented sunbeds are available for a fee in the managed areas of the beach, but most of the sand is open to visitors. Beachfront cafes and snack bars are within easy reach on the promenade.
Atakum Beach operates as a free (ücretsiz) public beach. There is no entrance fee and no private entry section. Local authorities maintain the waterfront daily, and cleaning crews keep the sand tidy. Visitors should note that shade is limited to scattered palms or rented umbrellas, and that the entire beach lies in full sun. Shade and seating along the promenade can be found in nearby parks and cafes. The beach tends to be busiest mid-afternoon on summer weekends, but early mornings and late afternoons are relatively quieter. Public transportation runs year-round, though lifeguards and on-site services typically only operate from late spring through early fall.
Overall, Atakum Beach (Nazar Plajı) is a safe, sandy urban beach favored by families and city travelers. It is best for sunbathing, swimming in calm water and evening walks along the lit seafront. The long shallow shoal makes it unsuitable for serious diving or water-skiing, but it is ideal for children and casual swimmers. Its convenient location—close to Samsun hotels and restaurants—makes it a practical choice for a beach day. Like many Black Sea beaches, it lacks the clear turquoise of the south coast, but the clean sand and municipal amenities provide a dependable seaside experience.
