Only unmarked government planes \u2013 \u201cJanet\u201d commuter flights from Las Vegas \u2013 touch down. (Janet Airlines tickets are not for sale, and passengers sign oaths never to discuss their missions.) The concrete runway itself has additional dirt extensions on the dry lakebed, just like nearby Edwards Air Force Base \u2013 so in effect it stretches into the flat salt until it peters out. All details are veiled under national security. Even identification of the airport code \u201cKXTA\u201d only came out in the mid-2000s. For decades, only clues \u2013 occasional radar blips, glimpses of ghostly flat-green C-20s \u2013 hinted that Groom Lake had a runway. According to the official Burning Man airport guide: \u201cBlack Rock City Municipal Airport, FAA identifier <strong>88 NV<\/strong>, serves general aviation and charter flights all the way out to the playa\u201d. This emphasis contrasts sharply with Area&nbsp;51\u2019s closed nature, where even speaking of what lands is taboo. Information from declassified UFO-busting projects and limited commercial imagery implies that Homey Airport\u2019s concrete is maintained meticulously, yet nothing is open to observers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What makes Area&nbsp;51 \u201cbizarre\u201d is this extreme secrecy and solitude. Off-duty service members used to joke that their tours were just to test how quietly they could stand guard. The writer\u2019s first impression in satirical memoirs and official statements is always a hush, a wind in the sagebrush. Walk the perimeter fence long enough and you might hear nothing but distant coyotes \u2013 save a far-off military transport on Gulf Center.
