Description
The Doha Corniche is a seven-kilometer-long waterfront promenade that runs along Doha Bay in Qatar’s capital city of Doha. The Doha Corniche hosts annual festivities of national holidays such as Qatar National Day and National Sports Day. It is a major tourist and recreational site in Qatar.
The Corniche encircles Doha Bay and is seven kilometers long. The Corniche is divided into three sections: the Park and Promenade, Corniche Street, and the Government Zone.
The Corniche Promenade and Park are popular recreational and social attractions for walkers, runners, skaters, joggers, and others.
Corniche Street is a vital thoroughfare that connects Doha’s developing West Bay commercial zone to the city’s south and Doha International Airport. It was constructed as a result of massive dredging work done in the late 1970s and early 1980s that changed Doha’s shoreline.
Administrative structures such as the Amiri Diwan may be located in the Government zone, which boasts a view of the bay.
The Corniche used to be an empty stretch of promenade with only a Sheraton Hotel visible, but development has accelerated in the twenty-first century, with dozens of buildings being erected to the north of the Corniche. The area’s growth is part of the country’s economic boom and part of an attempt to boost tourism made possible by the 2006 Asian Games.
Many of Doha’s most recognizable landmarks may be seen along the Corniche, which runs from the Museum of Islamic Art to the Sheraton Park, which is located near the unique pyramid-shaped Sheraton Doha Resort & Convention Hotel.
