The “Academie des Beaux-Arts” is often regarded as a tourist attraction, and it is an excellent location to meet some of the country’s most renowned painters, both in and out of its gallery. Big figures like Alfred Liyolo, Lema Kusa, and Roger Botembe teach here, as does Henri Kalama Akulez, the world’s only completely abstract working artist, whose private studio is worth a visit.
Congo is the epicenter of African popular music. Once you get the hang of it, the rhythms are addictive. Try going to a small pub or disco in Bandal or Matonge (both in Kinshasa), preferably one with live soukouss music, and simply dancing!
