Celebrated to mark the &#8220;500th anniversary of the discovery of America,&#8221; the inaugural edition of the festival was called the &#8220;America Film Festival.&#8221; The celebration concentrated on South American films, which the mainstream media and film business sometimes ignores.<\/p><p>The festival debuted the creative &#8220;CineVision&#8221; program in 1996, which sought to show movies from the Global South challenging Western media&#8217;s prevailing narratives and preconceptions. Along with documentaries, short films, and experimental works, the program highlighted movies from Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. Anna Ladinig, a film curator and researcher, has been the festival director since October 2019; she has injected novel ideas and viewpoints into the event.
