With a variety of slopes, terrain and activities to suit all tastes and abilities, Mayrhofen is among the best ski and snowboard destinations in the world. Mayrhofen offers lots of challenges and fun, regardless of your experience level \u2013 from beginner to expert or anything in between. About an hour’s drive from Innsbruck Airport, at the end of the Ziller Valley, is the ski resort of Mayrhofen.<\/p>

Spread over two peaks, Penken and Ahorn, Mayrhofen has 57 ski lifts and 136 kilometers of skiing. From the city center, you can reach both summits by gondola, thus relieving you of the worry of buses or cars. With route options for any ability, from gentle blues to steep blacks, Penken Mountain is the larger and better-known of the two. Not for the timid, the Harakiri, the highest slope in Austria with a slope of 38 degrees, is also there. If you triumph over the Harakiri, you can show off your “I Survived Harakiri” t-shirt and win a free photo shoot on Friday. With six separate sections for different skill levels, Vans Penken Park \u2013 one of Europe’s best-known freestyle parks \u2013 is also located at the top of Penken Mountain. For beginners learning their routines and jumps, The Kids Park is a fantastic place.<\/p>

Although smaller and quieter, Ahorn Mountain has some lovely and picturesque runs, especially for intermediate and experienced skiers. There is also a peaceful 5.5 kilometer valley that takes you back to the city. Families will also find Ahorn Mountain a great place, as it offers a winter hiking route, a children’s ski area, and a fun hill.<\/p>

Thanks largely to its high-altitude neighbor, Hintertux, Mayrhofen boasts a consistent snowfall record. Just a short bus ride from Mayrhofen, Hintertux is a glacier that offers year-round skiing. Access Hintertux as well as other neighboring ski resorts including Zell am Ziller, Gerlos and F\u00fcgen using the same Zillertal Superskipass. One of the largest ski areas in the world, the Zillertal Superskipass has 535 km of skiing on 180 lifts. For summer skiing, Hintertux is particularly popular, as it offers national ski teams and snowboarders who want to practice or have fun out of season, perfect conditions and terrain. Hintertux also features a natural ice tunnel open for guided exploration.<\/p>

Along with skiing and snowboarding, Mayrhofen is a fantastic place to socialize and party. With so many bars, pubs, clubs and restaurants to choose from, the city exudes energy. With 142 kilometers of well-maintained slopes and 58 modern ski lifts and cable cars, Mayrhofen Ski Resort is among Austria’s largest and most varied ski destinations. Two main ski areas make it up: Ahorn and Penken, connected by a free ski bus line. Furthermore, accessible from Mayrhofen there is year-round ski access to the Hintertux Glacier.<\/p>

Beginner, family and leisure skiers who enjoy wide, sunny and mild slopes will find the Ahorn ski area perfect. Accessible from the center of Mayrhofen to the summit of Mount Ahorn in around six minutes, the Ahornbahn is the longest cable car in Austria. With 19 kilometers of slopes, the Ahorn ski area has the longest run in the Zillertal \u2013 the 5.5 kilometer Valley Run Ahorn. The Penken ski area is the inverse of Ahorn: it’s the place for skilled skiers looking for difficult and varied terrain, action enthusiasts and adrenaline seekers. The Penkenbahn, a contemporary gondola that departs from the city of Mayrhofen and takes guests to the heart of the Penken ski area in eight minutes. With a slope of 78%, Harakiri is Austria’s steepest and most well-maintained slope among the 123 kilometers of slopes in the Penken ski area. The Zillertal Valley in the Tyrol region of Austria is home to the Mayrhofen ski resort. The great mountains of the Zillertal Alps surround it and provide a spectacular setting for snowboarding and skiing. About 75 km from Tyrol’s capital, Innsbruck, and about 150 km from Salzburg, Mozart’s birthplace, the resort is<\/p>

As the Mayrhofen ski resort is well connected by road, rail and air, getting there is simple. From Innsbruck or Salzburg, you can drive to Mayrhofen in around an hour and a half or take a bus or taxi. From Innsbruck or Salzburg you can also take a train to Jenbach and then change to the narrow-gauge Zillertalbahn, which passes over the valley and ends in Mayrhofen. Alternatively, you can travel to Salzburg or Innsbruck airports and then take a bus or taxi to Mayrhofen.<\/p>

Since the end of the 19th century, when the first skiers discovered the valley and mountains, skiing has had a long and rich history in the Mayrhofen region. The first ski clubs opened in Mayrhofen in 1906; the first ski schools opened in 1929. Originally the resort’s main ski slope, the first ski lift was built in 1954, connecting Mayrhofen with the Penken mountain.<\/p>

Mayrhofen’s excellent snow and varied winter sports scene are among the main factors contributing to its outstanding reputation as a snow resort. From beginners to experts, the resort offers a variety of ski courses for skiers and snowboarders at its 2,500 meters of altitude. Along with off-piste sections and snow parks for freestyle aficionados, the resort has over 200 kilometers of accessible blue runs as well as difficult black routes. The resort also has a glacier ski area, the Hintertux Glacier, available all year round and with guaranteed snow even in summer.<\/p>

Sufficient snow normally falls during the winter, from December to March, and the ski slopes are meticulously maintained. With its contemporary snowmaking technology covering 80% of the slopes, the resort constantly guarantees optimal snow quality. The resort’s modern elevator systems can carry up to 70,000 passengers per hour, thus reducing waiting times and increasing skiing time.<\/p>

However, snow conditions can be more patchy in the spring months of April and May. The average snow depth in April in Mayrhofen is around 70 cm; in May it reduces to around 30 cm. In April the slopes are still in good condition; but, due to rising temperatures, they may become softer in May. So when booking your holiday if you plan to visit Mayrhofen in spring, make sure you check the snow report and weather forecast. Given the height of the resort \u2013 630 meters \u2013 it may surprise you that Mayrhofen’s slopes are mostly above the tree line. Even so, most of the slopes are between 1,650m and 2,500m in altitude, meaning they remain essentially covered in snow throughout the year. Mayrhofen offers 142 km of slopes and 58 lifts; The Zillertal as a whole has 542 km of slopes and 180 lifts, including F\u00fcgen, Hochf\u00fcgen, Kaltenbach, Zell am Ziller, Gerlos, K\u00f6nigsleiten and Hintertux. Each multi-day pass winds through the entire valley.<\/p>

Mayrhofen has 66 km of red slopes, 44 km of blue slopes and 32 km of black slopes; however, given Austria, several of the blues here may well be classified as reds in other resorts. With several reds offering a real challenge, the lanes are especially suited to qualified intermediates. For example, the long and steep red Devil’s Run on the Horberg side will test your endurance and skill. Exciting reds with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, the Schneekar and Tappenalm slopes also excite you.<\/p>

More experienced skiers and snowboarders will find enough to enjoy themselves; Mayrhofen is home to the steepest slope in Austria, the 78% Harakiri (although this gradient can only be found on a small section of the entire route). Harakiri requires speed, control and courage to overcome its slippery and rough surface; It’s not for the timid. And with fresh snow, there’s plenty of off-course not far from the designated paths. Each lift offers steep options for a good compromise. An interesting and difficult off-piste path leading to the valley is the Nordhang, which starts from the Knorren cable car.<\/p>

At the beginning of their adventures, beginners will choose certain locations; however, they may not be in places where you can easily meet for lunch with more experienced friends. The best cr\u00e8che slopes are in Ahorn, another ski area besides Penken. From the city and returning along the same route at the end of the day, beginners ride the Ahornbahn, the largest cable car in Austria, with capacity for 160 passengers. There’s also room for group negotiations, as the Penken gondola summit features numerous beginner runs and some severe hills leading down from Ahorn to the town. Ideal for practice and skill development, Penken also features some simple blue runs, such as Mittertrett and Schwendberg.<\/p>

Considered one of the best terrain parks in the Alps, Penken Park in Mayrhofen is Benevolent under the Sun-Jet cable car in Penken, it is packed with kickers, boxes and rails at 2,100m. as a children’s area with its own elevator.
