It was founded by monks in the 8th century and named Cella in Bisoncia, which means \u201ccell\u201d or \u201cmonastery\u201d in Latin. The town has an old Romanesque and Gothic parish church, which dates back to the 12th century, and a Renaissance castle, Schloss Rosenberg, which was built in the 16th century. Zell am See did not achieve town status until 1927, when it became part of the newly formed state of Salzburg.<\/p><p>Zell am See is also a popular winter and summer resort at the foot of the Schmittenh\u00f6he mountain, which offers stunning views of the surrounding Alps. The town has many ski resorts and cable cars that connect it to other villages and peaks.
