At over 17,500 residents, Braunau am Inn is the oldest and most populated town in the Innviertel area.It is well recognized for having been the birthplace of Adolf Hitler as well as for its rich cultural and historical legacy.Together with Simbach am Inn, a German town on the other bank of the Inn river, Braunau am Inn comprises a cross-border urban hub.<\/p>

In 1120 Braunau am Inn was first recorded as Prounaw, and in 1260 it was granted town privileges. Up to the Treaty of Teschen in 1779, it was a town in the Duchy of Bavaria. Throughout the Napoleonic Wars, it changed hands many times before, in 1816, it joined the Austrian Empire. Originally a garrison town and the location of a sizable prisoner of war camp during World War I, Braunau am Inn was temporarily seized by the US Army during World War II and thereafter included into the American Zone of Occupation in Austria until 1955.<\/p>

Rich in cultural legacy, Braunau am Inn is home to institutions like Braunau Contemporary History Museum, Vorderbad Museum, and Herzogsburg Museum. Among the historical sites are the town wall, fish fountain, iron horse, palm monument, and town hall square. Events of a cultural nature include the Advent Market, Literature Days, Braunau Music Festival, and Peace Prize. Parks, gardens, leisure spaces, and sports facilities are examples of outdoor pursuits. Among the noteworthy sites are Braunau Parish Church, Town Hall Square, and St. Stephen’s Church.<\/p>

Hitler was born in 1889 into a leased room on the top floor of a Braunau am Inn home. Three years old was when his family moved away. Later on, the mansion turned into a tourist attraction and a shrine for Nazi adherents. Following World War II, the home housed a bank, a school, a library, and a charity.The home was leased by the Austrian government from Gerlinde Pommer, the owner, to keep it from becoming a neo-Nazi site. The government declared intentions to utilize the mansion as a human rights teaching facility and police station in 2023. Expected to cost \u20ac20 million, the refurbishment should be finished by 2025.<\/p>
