The Iron Fountain On Brucker’s Main Square

The Iron Fountain, with its arbor fashioned fully in the Renaissance style, is one of Styria’s most notable wrought iron works.

Since the 12th century, the Iron Fountain has protected the people of Bruck who do not have their own water source from having to trek down to the Mur’s banks. As the well reached the river’s groundwater level, there was also fresh water from the Mur in the middle of Bruck once it was erected.

The 1626 well arbor is adorned with spindle flowers and wrought iron tendrils. On top was a little statue of Saint George. On the parapet, there is also a 1693 enclosing grating and an 1883 flywheel.

It has existed as a landmark in a prominent position on the city’s main plaza since the early 17th century. The main plaza is the second biggest inner city square in Austria, with 13,000 m2.The fountain is no longer in service, but it remains a brilliant attraction for the people of Brucker, especially at night.
