The Steyr town hall, located at Stadtplatz 27, is a rococo edifice planned and erected between 1765 and 1778 by Johann Gotthard Hayberger. The architect was Wolfgang Hueber.
The noteworthy element is the onion dome, which emphasizes the building’s vertical posture. On the balustrade and on either side of the tower, six allegorical figures (from left to right) are depicted: Lady Justice with a sword, scales, and blindfold, Penal Law with an iron ball and chain, Omniscience with the Eye of God, Self-knowledge with a mirror, Church Patronage with a censer, and Roman Law with a book and pillar.
A clock and enormous pillars adorn the front of the building. The windows on the first and second storeys are covered and barred on the ground and first levels.A wrought-iron trellis surrounds the balcony over the main doorway.Above the gateway, the city coat of arms features a flame-spitting panther. The conference room is on the Enns side, with a superb stucco ceiling and marble door jambs; the city archive is on the first floor of the right side wing.

The town hall was built to replace an earlier edifice that had deteriorated.Hayberger’s ideas date back to 1757, however they were not implemented until 1765.The city master builder Wolfgang Hueber and the chief city treasurer Johann Anton Mayrhofer oversaw the construction work. The main construction was completed in 1772, while the rear wings, which were erected around a courtyard, were completed in 1778.The building has been constantly altered and renovated after WWII’s end; for example, the front wing was enlarged in 1956.The baroque hall, which previously housed the city records, was renovated into a festival hall in 1979.The clock was replaced the next year. The facade must be totally redone every decade. Since 2000, the facade has been light gray; it was formerly orange-pink.
