Shopping Arena Alpenstrasse

The retail Arena Alpenstrasse, formerly known as the Shopping Mall Alpenstrasse or SCA, is located in the southern region of Salzburg, Austria.

When it debuted on April 26, 1990, it was the first of its kind in the city. The property had a total area of 13,000 m2, with 9,000 m2 dedicated to retail space. It was divided into two sections located on either side of Alpenstraße. Initially, there was a plan to create an above-ground connection between the two sub-buildings. However, this idea was ultimately not permitted. Instead, a subterranean shopping mall was constructed.

The relevance of the SCA diminished when the Europark was developed in the western part of the city in 1997, primarily because of limited space. Around the year 2000, an architect’s firm presented conversion proposals that unfortunately were never implemented. In 2008, there was finally a change in ownership.

In the spring of 2011, the design advisory board of Salzburg approved an increase to 24,000 m2 for the city. The proposed plans involved the complete demolition of the western section of Alpenstraße 114, while the eastern section would be converted. The groundbreaking ceremony for the new building occurred in April 2012. The estimated cost for its completion was 60 million euros. The building was opened in spring 2015. Additionally, there is a multi-story car park available, offering a total of 720 parking spaces.

The name was changed to Shopping Arena upon its reopening. Silberball, a company based in Bregenz, was responsible for creating the name, designing the logo, and developing the word-picture mark.In addition to its many corporate locations, there are also gourmet offerings, various services, and a range of activities available for both children and adults. The customer magazine, Shopping Arena Live, started publishing in autumn 2015.
