Lower Austrian State Library

The Lower Austrian State Library (NLB) is a library in Austria.It is a scientific library that is open to the public and is located in St. Pölten.It is the state library of the federal state of Lower Austria, as well as the state’s central library and regional library.

It is a public general or universal library that houses scientific books from all disciplines of study.The NLB has two foci: one on works on Lower Austrian regional studies (it is also the library of the Association for Regional Studies of Lower Austria), and the other on all subjects related to provincial administration (it is also the official library of the Lower Austrian provincial government).In addition to over 365,000 printed books, the library includes approximately 100,000 historical images of locations and structures, as well as approximately 20,000 maps.

From 1813 until 1967, the library was housed in the old Niederösterreichische Landhaus (now Palais Niederösterreich ) in Vienna, then from 1967 to 1996 at a building on Teinfaltstraße in Vienna.Finally, in 1997, the newly built library facility in St. Pölten’s government quarter opened its doors.Since 1861, it has had the title of State Library.

The new library’s building expenditures totaled 5.76 million euros; in 2001, the NLB spent around 929,000 euros and received approximately 8,000 euros.There were 21 employees in the start of 2002.
