Kajetanerplatz

The Kajetanerplatz at the end of Kaigasse is a pedestrian precinct in Salzburg that was totally renovated in the summer of 2021. A deeper look at the square’s structures and history shows some great names, a noteworthy church, and a pleasant atmosphere.

The square’s focal point is an attractive splash fountain that gives summer refreshment. The Kajetaner Church provides some peace and quiet, as well as access to the Sacred Staircase on Saturdays. The courthouse is directly across from the church, and the attractive row of buildings on the other side of the plaza create a lovely backdrop for photography.

In 1797/98, the German explorer Alexander von Humboldt lived in the building at the corner of Schanzlgasse for a few months. The courthouse, which was completed in 1909, is just across the street. In 1957, the Trude-Hillinger-Brunnen [fountain] was installed as a source of drinking water. It resembles the gardens that adorned this area until the 16th century.

The Kajetanerplatz is a car-free zone that hosts a weekly farmers’ market on Fridays. Enjoy the delights of the historic Holztrattner bakery and the Hinterbrühl restaurant while conversing with local Salzburgers. The square’s appeal is enhanced by the similarly convivial mood in the wine bars and stores.
