Helmut-Zilk-Park is a park in Vienna’s Favoriten neighborhood.
The Helmut-Zilk-Park is a 70,000 m2 park in the heart of the Sonnwendviertel in Favoriten, on the former site of the Vienna freight station.In addition to extensive meadows and a young stock of 520 trees, the park has a playground for small children, children, and young people, an approximately 1400 m2 motor skills park, neighborhood gardens, drinking fountains, a dog zone, Seating, butterfly meadows, a sun deck, and a café – pastry shop with park user toilet access, WLAN (at the educational campus Sonnwendviertel), and seasonal park supervision by the Association of Vienna Youth Centers and
Landscape planners from Austria, Switzerland, Germany, and France competed in a concept competition to develop the park in 2010.The idea by Zurich-based Hager Partner AG was chosen as the competition winner by a jury led by Cordula Loidl-Reisch.Helmut Zilk (1927–2008), a former journalist and social democratic mayor of Vienna, was named the park on March 1, 2011.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the park’s development, which is expected to cost roughly €5 million, took place on May 22, 2014.The park’s initial section was dedicated on July 8, 2016, in the presence of Helmut Zilk’s widow, Dagmar Koller, and environmental councilor Ulli Sima.The second section of the park opened on June 9, 2017, to commemorate the namesake’s 90th birthday. The park was Vienna’s largest park initiative in the previous 40 years.
