Gablonzer Hut

The Gablonzer Hut is more than just a place to rest and refuel after a long day of exploring the mountains. It is also a model of ecological sustainability, social responsibility, and cultural heritage. The hut’s hosts, Martin and Sabine, have made it their mission to preserve the natural beauty and diversity of the alpine environment, while providing a high-quality service and a warm welcome to their visitors.

The Gablonzer Hut was built in 1934 by the Gablonz section of the German Alpine Association, which consisted of Sudeten Germans who were expelled from their homeland after World War II. The hut was named after the city of Gablonz (now Jablonec nad Nisou in the Czech Republic), which was famous for its glass and jewelry industry. The hut was transferred to the Austrian Alpine Association in 1955 and has been renovated and expanded several times since then.

The hut is situated at an altitude of 1,550 meters on the Zwieselalm, a plateau that offers panoramic views of the Dachstein massif and the Gosau valley. The hut can be reached by cable car from the village of Gosau, or by foot from various starting points. The hut is open all year round and has a capacity of 80 beds in rooms and dormitories. The hut is also a popular stop for ski tourers and snowshoers in the winter.

The Gablonzer Hut is one of the few mountain huts in Austria that has been certified as an “Indulgent Cottage” by the Austrian Alpine Association. This means that the hut meets high standards of quality, comfort, and service, while also respecting the principles of environmental protection and regional development.
