Austrian Aviation Museum

The Austrian Aviation Museum, located at Graz-Thalerhof Airport, was established in 1979 by Wilhelm König and Josef Gaisbacher. It is currently managed by the private association known as the Austrian Aviation Museum. The museum’s primary objective is to gather and exhibit aircraft from various periods and categories, with a particular emphasis on Austrian aviation.

The museum is situated in the southeastern area of Graz Airport and is comprised of an outdoor space, a hangar, and a small shop. The museum was initially situated in the northern section of the airport, specifically in the vicinity of the current northern apron area. The second location was located to the south, specifically in the area where the parking garage stands today. In 1996, the hall collapsed due to the heavy snow, resulting in damage to multiple exhibits. The new hangar was completed on the current site in 1997.

The museum’s collection started with its first exhibit in 1981, which was an Erwin Musger Mg 19A glider. Over the years, the museum has expanded its collection to include a diverse range of aircraft and exhibits. Currently, it houses two helicopters, thirteen jet aircraft, as well as a significant number of propeller planes and gliders. In addition to the aircraft, there are also turbines, uniforms, ejection seats, a flight simulator, models, an apron bus, and aircraft tractors on display, among other things.A few of the exhibits are currently undergoing restoration.
