Weather & Climate In Krimml

Krimml lies in the Alps, at 1,100 meters above sea level, which influences its temperature and precipitation. The town has a continental climate, hence winters in Krimml are cold and snowy; summers are warm and bright; spring and fall are nice and wet. Krimml’s climate is further affected by the Foehn wind, a dry and warm southern breeze that could cause unexpected changes in temperature.

Krimml finds place in Hohe Tauern National Park, the largest alpine natural reserve. Comprising around 1,800 square kilometers, the park boasts a varied mountain range, glaciers, valleys, and lakes. Rising in the east-west flowing Krimmler Achental valley, Krimml town is surrounded by high mountains. The Krimmler Ache River sculpts the valley; it flows down 380 meters to produce Europe’s highest waterfalls.

Krimml’s position in the Alps has a big impact on its climate and weather. Acting as a natural barrier, the mountains change or limit the air masses originating from several sources. For example, Krimml receives more sunlight and less precipitation as the mountains often block the Atlantic air masses bringing cool, comfortable air from the west. But cooler, drier air from the continental air masses of the east coast might more easily reach Krimml, hence lowering humidity and temperatures.

The Foehn wind is another continental air mass that might affect Krimml’s temperature, especially in autumn and winter. Rising above the southern Alps and then descending on their northern side, the air warms and dries out to produce the Foehn wind. Whereas in the highlands the Foehn wind can cause avalanches, landslides, and forest fires, in Krimml it may bring fast temperature rises, brilliant sky, and strong gusts.
