Originating in the tenth century, it is a perfect example of the simplicity and austerity defining <strong>pre-Romanesque religious architecture<\/strong>. Perched on a hill with a view of the <strong>Valira River<\/strong>, the chapel offers amazing views of the surrounding terrain, so harmonizing <strong>spiritual legacy<\/strong> with the beauty of the earth.<\/p>\n<p>Constructed of locally sourced stone, the <strong>chapel&#8217;s rectangular form<\/strong> and gabled roof covered with shale slate reflect the pragmatic and creative architectural ideas of their time. The understated design&#8217;s simplicity is much improved by the semicircular apse. A small bell accentuates the top of the building and adds a faint but powerful component to its whole presence. Whereas the pointed arch of the main door was introduced in a later period, harmonically integrating elements from many eras, the entrance on the opposite wall is elegantly framed by a <strong>semicircular arch<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Originally among the several properties owned by the monastery of <strong>Sant Serni de Tav\u00e8rnoles<\/strong>, the chapel served as an oratory for the <strong>Cal Berenguer house<\/strong>. This link between the chapel and a larger religious and cultural story emphasizes its importance as a <strong>spiritual site<\/strong> in <strong>mediaeval Andorra<\/strong>.
