Originating in the <strong>10th century<\/strong>, this <strong>pre-Romanesque chapel<\/strong>, located in <strong>Els Vilars d&#8217;Engordany<\/strong> within the parish of <strong>Les Escaldes-Engordany<\/strong>, is an amazing example of <strong>unembellished rural architecture<\/strong> that has stood through the years.<\/p>\n<p>Like <strong>pre-Romanesque architecture<\/strong>, <strong>Sant Rom\u00e0 dels Vilars<\/strong> reflects a great simplicity and utility. The building has a single rectangular nave that ends in a <strong>quadrangular apse eastward<\/strong>, defined from the main nave by a <strong>presbytery arch<\/strong>. Though simple, this layout emphasizes the church&#8217;s vital function as a small haven for the neighborhood.
