The Santuario de la Mare de D\u00e9u de Can\u00f2lich<\/strong>, situated in the Andorran parish of Sant Juli\u00e0 de L\u00f2ria<\/strong>, stands as a distinguished Marian sanctuary<\/strong>, embodying profound historical, spiritual, and cultural importance. Nestled on the eastern slopes of the Serra Plana<\/strong> at 1,635 meters, the sanctuary offers not only breathtaking views of the surrounding mountainous terrain<\/strong> but also an opportunity for pilgrims<\/strong> and guests to interact with a rich tapestry of faith and history spanning centuries.<\/p>\n

The beginnings of the sanctuary are firmly rooted in Andorra’s medieval past<\/strong>. According to historical records, this site has been religious since as early as 1176. Along with Meritxell<\/strong> and San Antoni de la Grella<\/strong>, the sanctuary rose to prominence over the centuries and was mentioned in the Manual Digest de les Valls Neutras de Andorra<\/strong> (1745). Though its Romanesque background<\/strong> is clearly visible, especially in the complex polychrome carving of the Virgin Mary<\/strong>, its design is now defined by the 20th century. Thought to have originated in the 12th century, this Romanesque sculpture was appreciated by the Vatican<\/strong> in 1999 and is now on show in the nearby parish church, Sant Juli\u00e0 i Sant Germ\u00e0<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

From 1973 to 1979, the current sanctuary experienced modernizing. Complementing a rectangular nave, the gabled bell tower<\/strong>, barrel-vaulted ceiling, and triumphal arch that gracefully frames a Baroque altarpiece<\/strong> dedicated to Santa Maria<\/strong>, the structure exhibits the sanctuary’s historical legacy even if the obvious Romanesque features have disappeared. The connection of the sanctuary with the Virgin of Can\u00f2lich<\/strong> is rich in historical narrative and strong respect. According to tradition, a shepherd from Bixessarri<\/strong> came upon the Marian image in 1223 under the direction of a white dove to a cove that today serves as the sanctuary. Rising as a focal point of veneration, this complex polychrome carving of the Virgin embodies celestial direction and hope. Currently considered the patron saint of Sant Juli\u00e0 de L\u00f2ria<\/strong>, the Virgin of Can\u00f2lich remains a symbol of devotion.<\/p>\n

Every year on the last Saturday of May, the sanctuary becomes the focal point of the well-known Aplec de Can\u00f2lich<\/strong>, sometimes referred to as the “Can\u00f2lich Meeting<\/strong>.” The most important religious gathering in the region, this event attracts pilgrims<\/strong> climbing the mountain to honor the Virgin, perform holy rites, and participate in a shared morality of kindness and friendship. This journey offers a deep expression of belief and solidarity among the people engaged, reflecting the ongoing relevance of the sanctuary.<\/p>\n

One can reach the sanctuary by a serpentine road that veers off after Bixessarri<\/strong> and follows a succession of arresting hairpin turns to its elevated position. For millennia, the trip proved to be difficult; pilgrims<\/strong> saw the climb as a great statement of their commitment. The climb to Can\u00f2lich<\/strong> is still a great pilgrimage that combines the breathtaking natural beauty<\/strong> of Andorra’s mountainous terrain<\/strong> with moments of spiritual reflection. One can see the refuge from a clearing in the forest next to a small oratory by the Romanesque bridge of Aixovall<\/strong>, where an image of the Virgin Mary<\/strong> defines the path.<\/p>\n

For modern guests of the sanctuary, it offers a duality of experiences combining leisure activities<\/strong> with spiritual development<\/strong>. Offered from mid-July to mid-September with prior arrangements, guided tours explore its rich artistic legacy. The area, with picnic tables and barbecue facilities, invites guests to enjoy the inherent natural beauty<\/strong> of the site.
