Nestled on the eastern slopes of the Serra Plana at 1,635 meters, the sanctuary offers not only breathtaking views of the surrounding mountainous terrain but also an opportunity for pilgrims and guests to interact with a rich tapestry of faith and history spanning centuries.

The beginnings of the sanctuary are firmly rooted in Andorra’s medieval past. According to historical records, this site has been religious since as early as 1176. Along with Meritxell and San Antoni de la Grella, the sanctuary rose to prominence over the centuries and was mentioned in the Manual Digest de les Valls Neutras de Andorra (1745). Though its Romanesque background is clearly visible, especially in the complex polychrome carving of the Virgin Mary, its design is now defined by the 20th century. Thought to have originated in the 12th century, this Romanesque sculpture was appreciated by the Vatican in 1999 and is now on show in the nearby parish church, Sant Julià i Sant Germà.

From 1973 to 1979, the current sanctuary experienced modernizing. Complementing a rectangular nave, the gabled bell tower, barrel-vaulted ceiling, and triumphal arch that gracefully frames a Baroque altarpiece dedicated to Santa Maria, the structure exhibits the sanctuary’s historical legacy even if the obvious Romanesque features have disappeared. Ceramic murals by Sergi Mas and an 18th-century Baroque altarpiece help to accentuate the interiors and create a harmonic mix of old and new artistic expressions.

The connection of the sanctuary with the Virgin of Canòlich is rich in historical narrative and strong respect. According to tradition, a shepherd from Bixessarri came upon the Marian image in 1223 under the direction of a white dove to a cove that today serves as the sanctuary. Rising as a focal point of veneration, this complex polychrome carving of the Virgin embodies celestial direction and hope. Currently considered the patron saint of Sant Julià de Lòria, the Virgin of Canòlich remains a symbol of devotion.

Every year on the last Saturday of May, the sanctuary becomes the focal point of the well-known Aplec de Canòlich, sometimes referred to as the “Canòlich Meeting.” The most important religious gathering in the region, this event attracts pilgrims climbing the mountain to honor the Virgin, perform holy rites, and participate in a shared morality of kindness and friendship. This journey offers a deep expression of belief and solidarity among the people engaged, reflecting the ongoing relevance of the sanctuary.

One can reach the sanctuary by a serpentine road that veers off after Bixessarri and follows a succession of arresting hairpin turns to its elevated position. For millennia, the trip proved to be difficult; pilgrims saw the climb as a great statement of their commitment. The climb to Canòlich is still a great pilgrimage that combines the breathtaking natural beauty of Andorra’s mountainous terrain with moments of spiritual reflection. One can see the refuge from a clearing in the forest next to a small oratory by the Romanesque bridge of Aixovall, where an image of the Virgin Mary defines the path.

For modern guests of the sanctuary, it offers a duality of experiences combining leisure activities with spiritual development. Offered from mid-July to mid-September with prior arrangements, guided tours explore its rich artistic legacy. The area, with picnic tables and barbecue facilities, invites guests to enjoy the inherent natural beauty of the site. Close by, a facility providing dining and lodging choices serves those who want to stay longer.

The great faith and rich cultural legacy of Andorra are embodied in the Santuario de la Mare de Déu de Canòlich. It invites people to enter a world where the spiritual, myth, and historical threads interact. Maintaining a close relationship with both residents and visitors, the sanctuary provides a forum for contemplative thought, a gathering place for social events, and a vantage point for magnificent mountain settings, preserving the legacy of the Virgin of Canòlich for future generations.

"listivo_14":["Churches & Cathedrals"],"listivo_8956":["Sant Julià de Lòria"],"listivo_2723":[],"listivo_9749":[
post-9402","listivo_listing","type-listivo_listing","status-publish","hentry","listivo_14-churches-cathedrals","listivo_8956-sant-julia-de-loria"],"listivo_9016":"","listivo_9031":["+376744045"],"listivo_130":[],"listivo_3411":

"},"listivo_345":

"},"listivo_145":["https://storage.googleapis.com/world-travel-guide/2024/12/Santuario-de-la-Mare-de-Deu-Canolich-1.jpg","https://storage.googleapis.com/world-travel-guide/2024/12/Santuario-de-la-Mare-de-Deu-Canolich-4.jpg","https://storage.googleapis.com/world-travel-guide/2024/12/Santuario-de-la-Mare-de-Deu-Canolich-3.jpg","https://storage.googleapis.com/world-travel-guide/2024/12/Santuario-de-la-Mare-de-Deu-Canolich-6.jpg","https://storage.googleapis.com/world-travel-guide/2024/12/Santuario-de-la-Mare-de-Deu-Canolich-8.jpg","https://storage.googleapis.com/world-travel-guide/2024/12/Santuario-de-la-Mare-de-Deu-Canolich-2.jpg","https://storage.googleapis.com/world-travel-guide/2024/12/Santuario-de-la-Mare-de-Deu-Canolich-9.jpg","https://storage.googleapis.com/world-travel-guide/2024/12/Santuario-de-la-Mare-de-Deu-Canolich-11.jpg","https://storage.googleapis.com/world-travel-guide/2024/12/Santuario-de-la-Mare-de-Deu-Canolich-7.jpg","https://storage.googleapis.com/world-travel-guide/2024/12/Santuario-de-la-Mare-de-Deu-Canolich-5.jpg"],"listivo_344":[],"listivo_8955":
"listivo_8998":["Closed"],"listivo_8999":["10 AM–2 PM"],"listivo_9000":["10 AM–2 PM"],"listivo_9001":["10 AM–2 PM"],"listivo_9002":["10 AM–2 PM"],"listivo_9003":["10 AM–2 PM"],"listivo_9004":["Closed
["GET
