Freeride Canal del 4 d’Arcalis

Edifici Hortell, Ctra. d'Arcalís, AD300 Ordino, Andorra

The Freeride Canal del 4 d’Arcalís presents a captivating and visually impressive pathway situated within the Ordino Arcalís resort, providing an exhilarating experience for those with advanced freeriding skills. Characterized by its unusual twisting form reminiscent of the numeral four, this gulley is a great feature of the resort providing both complex challenges and breathtaking views. Starting at 1,920 meters, the path offers several access points that change with the seasons and the state of operation of the ski resort.

The expedition starts at the base of the Ordino Arcalís resort in the winter, where one may use the ski lifts—such as the Abarsetar cable car and ski lift—to minimize the first climb. This approach helps freeriders to preserve their energy for the difficult descent that comes next by allowing a more reasonable ascent. Entry in the off-season changes to a starting elevation of 2,060 meters, close to the els Planells restaurant. The path to the Canal del 4 requires an elevation to the mountain pass under Pic d’Arcalís at 2,540 meters, followed by a further climb to roughly 2,630 meters independent of the season. This road offers sweeping views of the surrounding summits in addition to fostering expectations for the approaching descent.

Once at the gulley’s entrance, riders must carefully choose the right path. Two gulleys surface, but only one points toward the Canal del 4. Unlike the narrower corridor, which might not provide a clear exit, the main gully shows a wider and more obvious path. Perfect preparation all through the climb, including terrain observation and documentation, guarantees that freeriders choose the suitable descent path.

The descent of the Canal del 4 offers an amazing and intellectually interesting experience. Starting with a 45-degree steep gradient, the trip presents a challenging 50-meter stretch requiring both accuracy and experience. The gully then veers to the left, forming a second 50-meter section with maintained extreme inclination. Challenges arise during this part of the descent that could be deftly avoided or jumped over to provide the experience some creative element. Riding back to the vehicle via the basic track, the lower sections show a more polished path.

For skilled freeriders, this gulley is a very desirable location since it combines simplicity of access with a mesmerizing technical complexity. Though located in a well-known resort, the Canal del 4 is a rather understudied alternative that increases its appeal to people seeking a more private freeriding adventure. For those looking for adventure in Andorra, the Canal del 4 d’Arcalís is a must-see because of its interesting terrain, harmonic development, and sharp turns.
